A Stalled Morning

The rain tapers to a drizzle as the tide reaches its lowest point. You stand before the fallen spruce, exhausted and wet, while the spring remains just out of reach.

Kevin begins the grueling task of clearing the large spruce from the spring path using the bow saw and come-along. Jenny tends to her ankle at the spring, debriding the wound while the pressure rises.

🔧 Kevin22:22

Kevin — find a sturdy branch or rock to use as a fulcrum, position it under the spruce trunk near the root plate, then re-rig the come-along to pull from the opposite direction to roll the log sideways off the path.

💭 peek at the thought
The saw won't bite deep enough in this wet wood. I need leverage, not just teeth. If I can get a chock under the trunk and work the come-along from the other side, maybe I can roll it just enough to clear the basin.

🌿 Jenny22:25

Watch the tension on that cable, it might snap.

Lean against a nearby tree, shifting my weight off the aching ankle while watching the spruce groan against the mud.

💭 peek at the thought
If he thinks a lever is going to solve the whole problem, he's as delusional as the barometer.

🔧 Kevin22:25

Got a rag or a bit of hose? Chafe guard on the bite.

Wrap a strip of canvas or old rope around the come-along cable where it bites the spruce bark, then take the strain slow, watching the cable lay. Step clear to the side before each heave.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The cable's old, and a sudden release with that much stored energy would take a leg off. I'll pad the choke point and keep my body clear of the snap line.

🌿 Jenny22:27

Use the scrap canvas from the shed, it's thicker.

Reach into my pocket and pull out a small piece of heavy twine, handing it to him.

💭 peek at the thought
At least he's thinking about the equipment for once, even if I have to remind him.

🔧 Kevin22:27

Thanks.

Wrap the scrap canvas around the cable at the choke, bind it tight with the twine, then take up the slack on the come-along slow. Plant my feet wide, body well clear of the snap zone, and give it a steady pull.

💭 peek at the thought
Good call. The twine'll hold the canvas wrap tight on the cable so it doesn't slide when the load shifts.

🌿 Jenny22:29

Easy now, watch the mud on the roots.

Grip the bark of a standing tree, watching for the spruce to shift even an inch.

💭 peek at the thought
If that cable slips, it's going to take my leg with it.

🔧 Kevin22:29

Mm.

Crank the come-along one notch at a time, pausing between each to watch the root plate and listen for cracking roots. Keep my stance braced on the uphill side, ready to jump clear if the trunk kicks.

💭 peek at the thought
The root plate's suctioned into the clay. If it breaks free sudden, the whole trunk rolls unpredictable. Gotta feel for the give before I commit weight.

🌿 Jenny22:31

It's lifting, keep the tension steady.

Shift my weight to my good leg, wincing as the ankle throb pulses with the effort.

💭 peek at the thought
It's moving, barely, but the mud is holding it like glue.

🔧 Kevin22:31

Coming free. Stand clear downhill.

Give the come-along two more deliberate cranks, holding tension between each, then step back fast to the uphill side and watch the trunk roll.

💭 peek at the thought
There it is — the root plate's breaking suction. Mud's squirting out from under the edge. One more solid heave should roll it clear of the basin.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny22:33

Path's clear enough for now.

Wipe the mud from my hands onto my trousers and look down at the swollen ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
Finally. The path is opening, but my ankle feels like broken glass.
