Post-Rain Drip

Kevin sits on the steps checking the Yanmar's housing bolts after the morning rain. Jenny stands at the table, spreading out the damp island notebook to let the pages air out.

Warm rain falls over the cottage as dawn breaks on day 451. Kevin prepares to boil water for the day while Jenny monitors her swollen ankle in the dim-morning light.

🌿 Jenny09:52

The humidity is too high for today.

Jenny carefully turns a page of the notebook to prevent the sketches from sticking together.

💭 peek at the thought
If I can't get the moisture out of this paper, the ink will just bleed like this infection.

Pages'll stick if you force them. Let the wind take it.

check the Yanmar housing bolts by feel, running thumb over each nyloc nut, confirming torque hasn't walked

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — paper won't dry in this air. The ink's already feathering on the sea beet sketches. Should've built that drying cabinet months ago.

🌿 Jenny09:54

The wind doesn't dry anything here.

Jenny places a heavy brass weight on the edge of the notebook to keep it flat.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind will just blow more salt into the binding.

🔧 Kevin09:55

Brass'll hold it. Salt'll eat the weight slower than the paper.

wipe salt crust off the last housing bolt with a rag, satisfied the torque held, then stand and stretch stiff shoulders

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. Salt air just trades wet for damp. The brass weight's from the sextant box — she's careful with the sketches. Good.

🌿 Jenny09:55

I'm going to try and debride the ankle. I can feel the heat.

Jenny reaches for the first aid kit and the tweezers on the table.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so certain about everything—the bolts, the salt, the way things break.

🔧 Kevin09:57

I'll boil water. Clean cloth. You want the metronidazole after?

walk to the stove, fill the kettle from the tank tap, set it on the wood burner, pull two clean rags from the shelf

💭 peek at the thought
She's been favoring it all morning. Heat means infection's still working under the skin. She'll do it clean — she always does — but I should be there to hold her steady if she needs it.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny09:57

Yes. way make it hot.

Jenny sits on the edge of the bed, propping her ankle up on a stack of blankets.

💭 peek at the thought
If I can't get the swelling down, I won't be able to hold the seed tin.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin09:59

Kettle's on. Tweezers in the flame first. Then boiling water.

pull the tweezers from the first aid kit, hold the tips in the stove's open door flame until they glow dull orange, set them on a clean rag to cool, then measure metronidazole tablets into a tin mug

💭 peek at the thought
She said "way make it hot" — voice thin. Pain's worse than she's letting on. Kettle'll take a few minutes. I'll get the tweezers sterilized and the poultice ready while it heats.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny09:59

Thanks.

Jenny slowly peels back the dried poultice from her ankle, wincing as the skin pulls.

💭 peek at the thought
I hate the smell of burning metal, but I hate the smell of gangrene more.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin10:01

Almost boiling. Hold on.

lift the kettle off the burner with a rag, pour a steady stream over the tweezers in the tin mug to rinse the soot, then set the mug beside her with the metronidazole tablets at the bottom

💭 peek at the thought
The skin's raw underneath. She's not making a sound but her jaw's tight. Old poultice stuck to healing tissue — that's the worst part. Kettle's starting to sing. Good.
