The Afternoon Chill Settles

The tide has reached its peak and is now beginning to pull away from the dock. The wind has picked up, carrying the scent of rain from the northeast, as the barometer continues its steady drop toward 984 hPa.

The rain continues its steady assault against the cottage roof, a rhythmic drumming that masks the sound of the surf. Inside, the water tank has finally reached its 400-litre capacity, the overflow pipe trickling steadily into the basin. The air pressure continues to drop, signaling a shift in the weather despite the dry season heat.

Kevin — walk to the dock with the come-along and inspect the sister plank and transom bolts at the ebb slack tide.

💭 peek at the thought
Tide's turning. Wind's backing northeast — barometer dropping to 984. That's the pattern. Swell lag means the dock takes the real load after the pressure turns. Need to check the shackles and lines at low slack, not now. But the sister plank's floating on void... come-along held it at 0530. Might not hold the ebb surge.

Kevin, watch the north bolts—the tide is already pulling at the wood.

Sit up on the bed and peel back the sheets to check if the red line on my ankle has moved toward the knee.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast; if that boat doesn't come, the swell is going to take the whole assembly.

North bolts first. I see them.

Walk down to the dock, come-along in hand, and check the north piling bolts and shackles as the tide drops.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — north bolts take the ebb pull first. And she's watching her own leg while telling me how to do my job. Both things true.

🌿 Jenny11:23

Check for corrosion on the shackles, the salt has been eating them alive all winter.

Press a finger to the edge of the redness on my ankle, feeling for the heat and spread of the infection.

💭 peek at the thought
If those bolts shear, the whole dock goes, and then I'll never get the dinghy out in this storm.

🔧 Kevin11:23

Shackle housing's shot. Pin freed but the threads are gone in the body. Replacement went overboard. I'll wedge it oak and wire it tight for now.

Reach the dock, crouch at the north piling, and examine the mooring ring shackle and bolts as the current pulls.

💭 peek at the thought
Shackles. She's not wrong — winter salt gets into the pins, swells the threads. But she's lying in bed pressing her own infection line while telling me to check corrosion I've checked forty times. The shackle pin freed yesterday. Housing's compromised. Replacement lost overboard. That's the real problem.

🌿 Jenny11:25

Make sure the wire doesn't chafe the line, or the surge will snap it like twine.

Limp slowly toward the kitchen to put the limpets on the stove.

💭 peek at the thought
Oak wedges are a stopgap, not a fix. He's just delaying the inevitable.

🔧 Kevin11:25

Sail twine serving. Heavy. Thimble if I find one in the crate.

Check the shackle housing and mooring ring mortise, then serve the wire connection with sail twine against chafe.

💭 peek at the thought
Wire on rope — she's right. Chafe'll cut the line in one good surge. Need sail twine serving or a thimble if I've got one. Don't think I do. Might have to serve it heavy with the twine from the sail kit. She's limping. Ankle's not right. She knows it. I know it. Neither of us says it.

🌿 Jenny11:27

Use the thimble if you find it; the wire will saw through the twine once the increases hits.

Drop the limpets into the pot of boiling water, watching the steam rise in the damp kitchen.

💭 peek at the thought
He's trying, but the wood is too soft and the tide is too angry.
