Evening Meal and Rain Watch

The rain continues its steady drumming on the roof. The smell of boiled limpets and sea beet fills the small kitchen as they sit together at the table, the lantern flickering in the draft.

Kevin and Jenny sit in the heavy, still air of the cottage as the barometer continues to fall. Jenny tends to her ankle while Kevin listens to the static on the shortwave radio. The atmosphere is tense with the anticipation of the supply boat arriving in two days.

Jenny… I keep keying the mic at 0400. Tom's birthday today. I said I'm still listening. Nothing back. Just static. I don't know if he hears it. I don't know if he wants to.

stir the pot of limpets and sea beet, slow, watching the steam rise in the lantern light.

💭 peek at the thought
The rain won't let up. The tank's full, the pressure's falling, and I keep thinking about Tom's voice on that phone — sharp, wrong. I should've answered. I should've said something. Instead I went to sea. Now I'm here, keying the mic into static, hoping he's still listening.

Static is the only thing this island gives for free, Kevin.

Reach out and touch his hand briefly, then pull back to adjust the bandage on my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
He's searching for a ghost in the static. I can't tell him that the insulator was shattered, that he was probably just talking to himself. It's too fragile right now.

Not free. Costs the aerial. Costs the ground rod. Costs the coax I ran to the garden frame.

turn my hand over, palm up on the table, not reaching for hers, just leaving it there.

💭 peek at the thought
Her fingers brushed mine. First contact in three weeks. Same as yesterday with the saline bottle. She's not pulling away as fast. Or maybe I'm imagining it.

You can't fix a silence with a new piece of copper.

Leave my hand flat on the table, staring at the lines in my palm.

💭 peek at the thought
He's counting the cost in hardware because he can't count the cost in us. I hate how he does that—turning everything into a repair job.
