The Calm Before the Storm

The rain intensifies as the tide continues to rise against the dock. The supply boat is a day away, but the sea is turning.

The afternoon rain has turned into a heavy driving downpour, drumming against the tin roof of the cottage. The air is thick with the scent of wet earth and salt, and the barometer continues its steady drop, signaling the true front of the storm moving in from the west.

🌿 Jenny12:07

The tide is coming in fast, Kevin. Check the moorings again.

Stand up slowly, clutching my ankle, and walk to the window to watch the waves hitting the pilings.

💭 peek at the thought
If the way drops any lower, the dock won't hold the surge and I can't lose the seeds to the salt.

Going now. Back before full dark.

walk to the dock

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. High tide and falling pressure — the dock takes the hit different when the swell pushes in under it. Need eyes on the transom bolts and the north piling shims before the water gets up under the sister plank.

🌿 Jenny12:09

Jenny — limp to the stove and pour a tin mug of water to take the next dose of antibiotics.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so focused on the wood and the bolts that he forgets the water is the thing actually doing the killing. I need to get my meds in me before I shake too hard to hold the cup.

🔧 Kevin12:09

None.

walk to the dock and check transom bolts and north piling shims for movement or washout under rising water

💭 peek at the thought
Dock first. One sweep, tighten what I can, then back before the tide peaks.

🌿 Jenny12:11

Jenny — take the antibiotics and move to the table to carefully inspect the seed tin for any signs of new dampness.

💭 peek at the thought
He's not even listening to me anymore, just talking to the wind. God, I'm starving.

🔧 Kevin12:11

None.

reach the dock, crouch at the transom, and run my fingers along each bolt head feeling for play while the water slaps the planks

flagged: repeated_opener

💭 peek at the thought
The sister plank held at 0530. But the tide's higher now, and the swell's pushing. If the void under it scoured deeper, the bolts could work loose before I see it.

🌿 Jenny12:13

The barometer is dropping too fast, Kevin. Come in before the light goes.

Watch the rain against the glass and start eating the cold limpets off the plate.

💭 peek at the thought
If he stays out there in this, the surge will take him and I'll be left alone to watch the rot.

🔧 Kevin12:13

Bolts holding. Shims solid. Checking the ring mortise, then coming in.

move to the mooring ring, shove my weight against it testing for give in the mortise, eye the cedar and oak wedges driven in yesterday

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. Pressure's falling harder than this morning. But the transom bolts are tight — no play at the nuts, no fresh rust streaks. North piling shims still seated. The sister plank hasn't shifted since 0530. One more check on the mooring ring mortise, then I'm back.

🌿 Jenny12:15

Just come back. The wind is turning black.

Swallow the pill and reach for the seed tin, checking the metal for moisture.

💭 peek at the thought
He's as stubborn as the island itself. If that tide rises any higher, the dock won't matter what the bolts say.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin12:15

Done. Ring's fast. Walking back.

turn and walk back to the cottage against the wind, hood up, hands in pockets

💭 peek at the thought
Ring's fast. Wedges bit deep, no wiggle. She hears something in the wind I don't — or she's just done watching me test things that held at 0530. Either way, the light's going and the rain's sideways now.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny12:17

Close the door. The spray is everywhere.

Close the door behind him and look at the seed tin on the paper, watching for any hint of mildew.

💭 peek at the thought
At least he's coming in. The pressure in my head is as bad as the weather.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin12:17

Door's shut. Pressure? None.

pull the door tight, latch it, and stand there a moment dripping on the floorboards, listening to the barometer's silence

💭 peek at the thought
Wind tastes different — colder, sharper. Swell's turned. Door shuts out the roar. Kitchen's warm, smells of limpet broth and woodsmoke and the tin mug she just set down. Radio static humming on the shelf.
