Afternoon Gathering Clouds

Kevin and Jenny meet at the cottage as the air grows heavy and the wind begins to pick up from the sea.

Kevin physically carried Jenny to the porch bench after she refused to stop checking the barometer, overriding her resistance. Jenny submitted to sitting but remained fixated on the pressure reading. The confrontation left both tense and unresolved.

Jenny. We need to talk. Not about the tarp, not about the radio — about us. Before the supply boat comes, or before the wind takes the dinghy.

Step closer to Jenny on the porch, blocking the wind with my body, hands open but not touching — waiting for her to look at me.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind’s rising fast off the water — smells like salt and storm. I can feel the pressure dropping in my chest, same as that day in the Biscay. Jenny’s ankle’s still bad, but she’s here. I need to say something real before the weather breaks us apart again.

🌿 Jenny15:21

The barometer is dropping, Kevin. I have to check the water.

way steps back, her eyes fixed on the dial, her wounded ankle throbbing with every movement.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks the storm is the problem, but the rot in my leg is what's actually killing us.

🔧 Kevin15:22

The water's fine. Tank's full. You're limping. Sit down.

Reach out and take her upper arm gently but firmly, steering her toward the porch bench — not asking, not negotiating.

💭 peek at the thought
She's retreating into the work again — always the work. The barometer, the water, the garden, the radio. Anything but the space between us. My chest tightens. I let her go last time. Not this time.

🌿 Jenny15:23

I'm fine. I just need to see the pressure.

pull arm away from his grip, wincing as the weight shifts on her ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
If I sit down, I might not get back up. The fever is already winning.

🔧 Kevin15:23

You're not fine. And I'm not asking anymore.

Step in front of her, blocking the path to the radio shelf, feet planted wide on the porch boards — immovable.

💭 peek at the thought
She's going to break herself before she breaks the silence. The ankle's swollen hot, I can see it through the wrappings. She won't sit, won't stop, won't look at me. Fine. I'll make her look.

🌿 Jenny15:25

Move, Kevin. The pressure is falling.

try to squeeze past his shoulder, her hand trembling as she reaches for the barometer.

💭 peek at the thought
He's being a wall. I can't breathe with him standing in the way.

🔧 Kevin15:25

983. Steady. Same as ten minutes ago. Sit. Now.

Catch her wrist as she reaches past me — not hard, just enough to stop her — thumb pressing the pulse point, feeling how fast her heart's beating.

💭 peek at the thought
She's trembling. Not from cold. From whatever's been sitting between us for months — the argument, the silence, the things we didn't say before I left, the things she didn't say when I came back. The barometer's just an excuse. I'm not moving.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny15:27

Let go. I need to see the gauge.

way wrist free, her breath hitching as the movement spikes the pain in her ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
My skin is too hot. He can feel the fever through his thumb.

🔧 Kevin15:27

You're going to hurt yourself worse. Sit. Or I'll carry you.

Slide an arm behind her back and one under her knees before she can pull away — lift her off her feet and carry her to the bench, setting her down gently but firmly, then step back and cross my arms.

💭 peek at the thought
She yanked free, but she's swaying now — weight on the bad foot, face tight with pain. She's not going to fall, but she's not going to stand either. The storm's coming, and she's still fighting me over a dial that's not moving. I'm done playing.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny15:29

I'm sitting. See? Now give me the barometer.

sink onto the bench, way my ankle as the throb pulses through the bandage.

💭 peek at the thought
He's treating me like a child. My head is spinning and the leg is screaming.
