Waiting for the Storm

Jenny sits on the bench watching the western rain begin to lash the garden wall. Kevin checks the barometer, noting the pressure has continued to drop to 982 hPa.

Kevin and Jenny struggled in the heavy western rain to secure the garden tarp against the rising wind. Kevin failed to keep the northern corner down as the ground softened too quickly for the stakes to hold, while Jenny retreated to the cottage to monitor the barometer as the temperature began to drop.

Check the ties on the south wall again. Now.

stand up with a wince and limp toward the kitchen.

💭 peek at the thought
It's dropping too fast. If it hits 980, the wind is going to rip the tarp off before I can even reach the stakes.

On it.

Walk to the garden, check the south wall tarp ties and re-stake any loose corners.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — barometer at 982 and still falling means the south wall takes the full force. My ankle's stiff but I can move.

🌿 Jenny14:47

Jenny — put the kettle on the wood way and prepare the salt for the water.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving too slow. The wind is picking up and I need to get that water boiling before my hands shake again.

🔧 Kevin14:47

Kevin — walk the garden perimeter, cinch every tarp tie on the south wall, drive the oak stakes deeper where the ground's softened.

💭 peek at the thought
Kettle singing means she's making the limpet broth — good, we'll need the warmth. South wall first, then back to the radio shack to check the coax run before the wind tears it.

🌿 Jenny14:50

Watch out for the north corner, it's lifting.

lean against the counter and watch him fight the rain.

💭 peek at the thought
If the wind takes the tarp, the seeds are lost to the mud. I can't lose them now.

🔧 Kevin14:50

Kevin — sprint to the north corner, wrestle the tarp flat, pile the oak wedges and the spare firewood bundle on the lifted edge, then lash it with the heavy-duty twine to the nearest stake.

💭 peek at the thought
North corner's the lee — if it's lifting, the gusts are already wrapping. Got to weight it down before the fabric rips and takes the seedlings with it.

🌿 Jenny14:51

Come inside. The rain is turning cold.

take the kettle off the heat and start the salt water.

💭 peek at the thought
He's holding for now, but the pressure is still falling. I need to clean that leg before the fever spikes again.

🔧 Kevin14:51

Coming.

Walk back to the cottage porch, shake off the worst of the water, step inside and close the door behind me.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — rain's biting now, wind shifting colder. North corner's held. Time to get warm, check the radio, and see if the broth's ready.
