A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

Kevin tested the Yanmar engine under load in the dinghy to ensure the vibration fix held, while Jenny applied a mint poultice to her ankle and monitored the barometer for a further drop.

🌿 Jenny16:09

The air is turning heavy.

Walk to the kitchen shelf and check the barometer, then sit at the table to prepare the mint poultice.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping again; I can feel it in my joints before the needle even moves.

🔧 Kevin16:09

Yeah. I felt it when I was out. Barometer's at 982 and still sliding. I'll batten down the garden and check the dinghy lines before I do the radio check.

walk to the spring, fill the watering can, then head to the garden to water and stake down the tarp corners where the wind's lifting it.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping faster than I thought. If it keeps falling, the radio will start lying—static where there should be voice. I need to secure the seedlings and the dinghy before I even think about calling Tom.

🌿 Jenny16:11

Make sure the stakes are deep, that wind is coming fast.

Grind the mint sprigs in the mortar and pestle for the poultice.

💭 peek at the thought
982 and sliding. If it hits 970, we need to move the gear inside.

🔧 Kevin16:11

Stakes are oak, vertical grain. They'll hold. I'll double-line the corners to the deadmen.

walk to the garden, pick up the mallet leaning against the shed, drive each of the four oak stakes deeper at the tarp corners, then run a second length of heavy twine from each stake to the buried deadman anchors and cinch them tight.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — the gusts are already snapping the shade cloth. If the tarp lifts, the pepper and lettuce cells go with it. I'll drive the stakes in with the mallet and run a second line if the ground holds.

🌿 Jenny16:13

Check the radio when you're done with the wayhy.

Apply the mint poultice to the ankle and wrap it in clean cloth.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right about the stakes, but the pressure is still sitting in my chest.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin16:14

Radio's next. Ground rod first — corroded last week. I'll drive a new stake and re-braid the earth lead.

walk back to the cottage porch, unscrew the ground rod clamp from the radio earth terminal, pull the old galvanized rod from the damp soil beside the foundation, drive a fresh copper-clad stake deep with the sledge, clean the braid with eme

💭 peek at the thought
She said "wayhy" — she means the Yanmar test run, or maybe the garden. Either way, the radio check is at 1600. That's in two hours. The barometer's still falling. If I'm going to raise Tom on his frequency, the aerial needs to be solid. The new insulator's seated, coax is fresh, ground rod's the weak link. I'll check the stake and the braid before I key the mic.

🌿 Jenny16:15

Make sure the connection is tight, the signal is dying.

Walk to the window to watch the clouds, then open the notebook to sketch the sea-beet.

💭 peek at the thought
The ground is too soft from the rain, I hope that stake holds.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin16:17

Connection's clean. Copper stake, fresh braid, clamped tight. I'll solder the terminal and check SWR before the hour.

walk to the workshop shelf, retrieve the soldering iron and rosin-core solder, heat the iron on the wood stove top, solder the braid-to-terminal joint, let it cool, then key the mic briefly to check the SWR meter on the shortwave.

💭 peek at the thought
She hears it too — the static creeping up the bands. The ground braid's clean now, copper stake driven deep. I'll clamp it hard, solder the joint if the iron holds heat, then test the SWR before 1600. If the front's moving this fast, Tom's frequency might be the only one that cuts through.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny16:18

The barometer is still falling. 982.

Check the barometer again, then re-wrap the poultice on the ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The SWR looks okay for now, but that sky is turning the color of a bruise.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin16:19

SWR's 1.3 to 1 on 40 meters — clean enough for voice. I'll keep the mic hot at 1600 and listen for Tom's call sign.

return the soldering iron to the workshop, hang the ground rod clamp back on the terminal, then walk to the radio shelf, set the VFO to Tom's frequency (7.185 MHz LSB), turn the RF gain up, and wait for 1600, eyes on the barometer.

💭 peek at the thought
Pressure's holding at 982 — not dropping faster, but not rising either. The sky's uniform grey; no break in the clouds. If the front stalls, the radio might clear. I need to get the SWR reading now, while the sky's still and the aerial's not whipping in the wind.
