The Calm Before the Pressure

The air grows still as the overcast thickens, and the tide begins its slow turn back.

The warm rain continues to drum against the cottage roof, though the humidity has finally begun to break. Inside, the air is heavy with the scent of crushed mint and damp earth. Jenny sits on the kitchen chair, her leg propped up as she watches the rain blur the view of the garden, focusing on the throbbing pulse in her ankle.

🌿 Jenny17:17

It's going to rain again, Kevin.

sit on the edge of the kitchen chair, peels back the bandage, and inspect the extent of the redness on the ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping and my leg is throbbing in time with the waves; I need to check the area before the light fails completely.

🔧 Kevin17:17

Mm.

walk over to the chair and crouch beside her, tilting my head to catch the light on her ankle

💭 peek at the thought
She's stating the obvious — barometer at 975 and rising slow, clouds stacked to the ridge. The ankle's the real weather. I need to see how far that line's climbed since morning.

🌿 Jenny17:19

It hasn't moved past the knee yet, but it feels like fire.

press a clean finger lightly against the edge of the redness to check for heat and swelling.

💭 peek at the thought
He's looking at it like I'm a specimen under a magnifying glass. I hate that.

🔧 Kevin17:19

Let me see the groin nodes.

shift my weight to my heels, reach for her inner thigh with two fingers, press gently along the femoral chain

💭 peek at the thought
Fire means the infection's still active, fighting the antibiotics. If it hasn't crossed the knee joint, we've got hours — maybe a day — before it goes septic. Need to check the lymph nodes in her groin next.

🌿 Jenny17:21

Be gentle.

hold my breath, tensing the muscle as he checks for lumps.

💭 peek at the thought
If the nodes are swollen, the infection is fighting harder than I thought. I need that boat to come early.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin17:21

Nodes are up but not matted. Antibiotics are slowing it. We'll re-dose now, fresh poultice, and you drink the whole kettle.

reach for the antibiotic blister packs on the shelf, pop out a doxycycline and a metronidazole, set them on the table beside a tin mug

💭 peek at the thought
Nodes are palpable — shotty, tender, mobile. Not matted. That's something. The doxy and metro are holding the line but not winning it yet. She's running hot, I can feel the heat radiating off her skin. Need to re-dose, re-wrap, get fluids in her.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny17:23

I'm so tired of the heat.

take the pills with a large gulp of warm water, then watch him gather the mint sprigs.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so sure of the meds, but the barometer is still falling and my skin feels too tight.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin17:23

Won't be long now. Storm'll break the humidity.

crush the mint sprigs between my palms until the oil runs green, spread the mash thick on clean gauze, lay it over the angry red line and wrap it loose with the cloth strip

💭 peek at the thought
The heat's the fever talking. She's been running it for three days now, burning through what little reserve she had. Mint poultice won't touch the sepsis but it cools the skin, buys a little comfort. I'll make it thick this time, wrap it loose so the heat can escape.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny17:25

I hope it actually works.

lean back against the stone wall of the cottage, watching the rain blur the window.

💭 peek at the thought
The mint is cool for a second, but the throb is still there, rhythmic and deep. I need to finish that sea beet sketch tomorrow.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin17:26

It'll pull the heat out. Give it twenty minutes.

settle back on my heels, watch the rain slide down the glass, listen for the shift in the wind that means the front's here

💭 peek at the thought
She's doubting the remedy, not me. That's fair — we've tried this before. But it's all we've got until the boat comes or the fever breaks. I won't lie to her.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny17:27

Everything hurts today.

close my eyes, trying to focus on the pulse in my ankle instead of the pain.

💭 peek at the thought
Twenty minutes is an eternity when your leg feels like it's on fire. I see the seed tin on the table—it's waiting.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin17:27

I'll get a cool cloth.

rise, cross to the water tank, dip a clean rag in the cool water, wring it out, carry it back and lay it across her forehead

💭 peek at the thought
Everything hurts because her body's fighting a war on two fronts — the infection and the fever it brought. The antibiotics are the only real weapon. Time is the only ally. I should check her temperature properly, but the thermometer's in the bedroom and moving her risks the ankle. I'll wet a cloth for her forehead instead.
