A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

The air in the cottage is heavy and humid, the smell of salt and boiling water filling the space. Jenny sits on the chair, her leg extended as she watches the steam rise from the kettle on the wood stove. Kevin has just finished wrapping the cold pack in the clean cloth and is now moving to help the final dose of medicine and apply it to the throbbing heat of her ankle.

🌿 Jenny18:33

Ugh, it's pulsing again.

Sit on the kitchen chair, slowly unwrap the bandage, and inspect the ankle for new redness or heat.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure in my ankle is like a heartbeat trapped under the skin. I need to see if the redness has climbed before the light fails completely.

🔧 Kevin18:33

Show me.

Walk over to the kitchen chair, crouch down to eye level with her ankle, and wait for the bandage to come fully off.

💭 peek at the thought
She's been quiet about it all afternoon. The pulsing means pressure building — infection or inflammation pushing against tight fascia. Need to see what the skin's telling us before the next dose window.

🌿 Jenny18:35

It's hotter than it was this morning.

Peel back the damp gauze slowly, revealing the swollen, angry red skin around the ankle and calf.

💭 peek at the thought
He's looking at it like it's a broken piece of machinery. I hate that look in his eyes.

🔧 Kevin18:35

When'd you last take metronidazole?

Press two fingers gently along the leading edge of the redness, tracking upward toward the knee, feeling for heat gradient and induration.

💭 peek at the thought
Red line's crept another finger-width up the calf since noon. Skin's shiny tight — edema pressing against fascia. Heat radiates off it from six inches away. This isn't holding. It's marching.

🌿 Jenny18:37

Six hours ago. With the limpets.

Wince as his fingers touch the swollen skin, reaching for the water bottle on the table to steady myself.

💭 peek at the thought
The line is moving. If it hits the joint, I'm not walking to the spring again.

🔧 Kevin18:37

Water's on the stove. I'll heat it.

Stand, go to the wood stove, fill the kettle from the tank tap, and set it on the hot plate. Pull the antibiotic blister pack from the first aid kit on the shelf while the water heats.

💭 peek at the thought
Six hours. Doxycycline's long half-life helps but metronidazole's anaerobic coverage gaps at eight hours. She's burning through them faster than the dosing interval. Fever's coming back — can see the flush creeping up her neck. Three tablets left in the blister. Four if I split the last dose. Neither stretches to the supply boat.

🌿 Jenny18:39

way. It's getting really tight.

major back against the wall, watching the steam rise from the kettle, counting the throbs in my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The heat in the room is nothing way to the fire in my leg. I can feel the fever starting.

🔧 Kevin18:39

Eat something first. Corned beef, broth — whatever stays down.

Pull the tin of corned beef from the shelf, pry the lid with the church key, and set it on the table beside her with a fork. Check the pedal pulse on her left foot — press two fingers behind the medial malleolus, count.

💭 peek at the thought
Compartment syndrome's a real risk now — fascia can't stretch, pressure chokes the vessels. If the pulse goes distal, we've lost the window. Need to check capillary refill and pedal pulse before the next dose. And the metronidazole needs food or she'll vomit it back up with the fever.

🌿 Jenny18:41

I'll try. Just a bit.

Take a small, shaky bite of the beef, chewing while looking at the floor so he doesn't see the pain.

💭 peek at the thought
If I can't eat, the medicine won't hold. My stomach is a knot of cold wire.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin18:41

Good. Swallow. Water's hot.

Pour the hot water into the tin mug, drop in the last whole metronidazole tablet, stir with the fork handle until it dissolves, and hand it to her. Then grab the cold pack from the cool box and wrap it in the clean cloth.

💭 peek at the thought
She's hiding it. The shake in her hand, the way she won't meet my eyes — she's protecting me from the weight of it. Pedal pulse is thready but present. Cap refill three seconds, sluggish. Compartment's not fully shut down yet. Buy time with the next dose, elevation, cold if we can make it. Storm front's close — barometer was 981 steady at last check but the sky's wrong. Radio ground held at 0400. That's something.
