← Day 459

Apart — Kevin at the keeper's cottage, Jenny at the north cliffs

Midday check and radio watch

Kevin is at the cottage checking the Yanmar's fuel system and trying Tom's frequency on the shortwave. Jenny is at the north cliffs walking the Carex transect line, notebook in hand, ankle wrapped and braced.

Kevin monitors the radio for a signal from the supply boat while the pressure continues its slow dip. Jenny spends the afternoon on the cliffs, sketching Carex colonies and managing the increasing heat in her ankle.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the keeper's cottage

You bleed the Yanmar's fuel lines at the injector pump, watching for air bubbles in the clear return hose — none. The float needle you filed holds. You lift the handset, call Tom's frequency, and wait through the static.

🔧 Kevin18:09

Tom. Kevin. 0400 check. Barometer nine-seven-nine holding. Storm front still west. Jenny's ankle — infection's tracking. Started antibiotics. Supply boat due in five days if she shows. Over.

stand at the radio, handset to ear, watching the S-meter needle tremble in the static

💭 peek at the thought
Three days of calling. Three days of static. The barometer's holding but the sky's got that bruised look west of the lighthouse. Tom's frequency is clean — no fishing fleets, no coast guard chatter, just the ionosphere breathing. If he's listening, he's not answering. If he's not listening, the radio's just a very expensive noise maker.

🔧 Kevin18:13

Kevin — walk to the bedroom doorway, lean against the frame, watch Jenny's chest rise under the blanket — too fast, too thin. Feel the weight of the radio in my pocket like a stone.

💭 peek at the thought
No reply. Again. The static's not empty — it's got texture, like it's trying to say something but can't form the words. Jenny's fever's up again. I can feel it through the wall when I press my palm to the cottage stone. She's not crying out, but her breathing's shallow. The metronidazole's in her system, but it's a race now — between the drug and whatever's in her blood.

🔧 Kevin18:17

Jenny. Can you hear me? Squeeze my hand if you can.

sit on the edge of the bed, press the back of my hand to her forehead, then reach for the tin mug on the bedside shelf — last of the limpet broth, still warm enough

💭 peek at the thought
The fever's not breaking. She's burning through the blankets and I've got nothing stronger than doxycycline and three metronidazole tablets left. The evacuation letter from the trust sits in the radio box — signed, ready, but the supply boat's five days out if she comes at all. The helicopter can't fly in this weather. Not with that front bruising the western sky. I need to decide: ride it out here with what I have, or call the medevac frequency on the VHF and hope the coast guard hears a dead handheld through forty knots of wind.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the north cliffs

You move along the cairn line at the cliff edge, boot soles finding the familiar rock steps. The ankle holds with the brace, a dull ache rather than fire. You pause at the third cairn, pull the notebook, and compare today's Carex density to the sketches — same species, same zones, the island keeping its own counsel.

🌿 Jenny18:08

Stay down, you stubborn thing.

Sketch the edge of the Carex colony, noting the way the salt is catching the margins.

💭 peek at the thought
If the redness is still there by the time the boat comes, I have to use the medevac forms.

🌿 Jenny18:11

Jenny — check the barometer.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping again. I can feel it in my joints.

🌿 Jenny18:15

Jenny — wipe the condensation off the glass and close the casing.

💭 peek at the thought
976 hPa. It's moving. The air is getting heavy.
