The Approaching Front

The wind picks up, carrying the first scent of heavy rain from the east. The high tide remains high, waves lapping against the dock pilings with increasing force as the flat sky finally turns black.

Kevin struggled to force the kitchen window bolts shut as they seized, requiring the pipe wrench to move them. Jenny successfully secured the bedroom shutters and recorded the weather observations in her notebook before the wind began to pick up.

Check the latch on the kitchen window, Kevin. The wind is already turning.

Wince as I shift my weight, adjusting the ankle while pressing the cold cloth to the swollen skin.

💭 peek at the thought
If the barometer drops any further, the boat won't make it in regardless of the schedule.

On it.

Walk to the kitchen, test the window latch, force it home with the heel of my hand, verify the catch engages fully.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Wind's backing northeast already — barometer at 978 and holding steady means the front's sitting on us. Kitchen window latch has been sticky since the last storm; if it blows open we lose heat and the radio gear gets soaked.

Make sure the shutters are bolted down. This's going to be a mess.

Reach for my notebook to record the latest way reading before the paper gets too damp.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast; I can feel it in my joints.

Bedroom shutter bolts are seized. Getting the pipe wrench.

Cross to the bedroom, test the shutter bolts by hand, confirm they won't turn, retrieve the pipe wrench from the tool bag by the door, return and work each bolt until they drive home.

💭 peek at the thought
Shutters first. Porch side takes the brunt when wind backs northeast. Bolts on the bedroom one seized last week — need the pipe wrench for leverage.

🌿 Jenny18:49

Hurry. The wind is starting to howl through the stone gaps.

Rub my thumb over the swollen ankle, trying to ignore the heatradi from the skin.

💭 peek at the thought
If the roof doesn't hold, the seeds in the tin will rot.

🔧 Kevin18:49

Bedroom side done. Porch next.

Drive the last bedroom shutter bolt home with the pipe wrench, set the wrench down, move to the porch shutters, start on the windward bolts.

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's finding every gap. Bedroom shutter bolts are rusted fast — pipe wrench chews knuckles but they're moving now. Two more bolts on this side, then the porch shutters. Jenny's ankle heat radiating through the stone floor; sepsis doesn't wait for storms.
