Afternoon at the cottage

Kevin and Jenny are on the porch. The barometer reads 990 hPa and rising. The generator hums under its tarp. The dinghy rides at its storm anchor. A pot of limpet broth warms on the stove. They share a quiet meal and compare notes on the dock, the radio, and the supply boat due in two days.

Kevin attempted to contact Tom on the shortwave at 1800 but received only a garbled fragment about workers and robots. He secured the sea beet sketches inside, then monitored the dinghy from the porch as the storm intensified, noting the lines held. Jenny remained on the porch with her ankle elevated, tracking the barometer and watching the weather close in.

🔧 Kevin22:05

I’ll try Tom at 1800. If there’s no answer, I’ll log it and try again at 1900.

walk to the radio shelf, put on the headphones, tune to Tom’s frequency, key the mic and say: “Tom, this is Kevin on Sorrel. Over.” Then wait for a response.

💭 peek at the thought
The generator’s steady hum means we’ve got power for the radio tonight. Barometer’s climbing — good sign for the supply boat. I should key Tom again before dark, even if it’s just to hear the silence.

The wind is starting to shift. Don't forget the sketches are inside.

way back on the porch step, prop my aching ankle up on a crate, and watch the clouds bruise over the west ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is holding for now, but the air feels too heavy. Kevin is so focused on the schedule while the island is literally turning grey.

🔧 Kevin22:07

Got it. Finishing here, then the sketches go in the dry bag.

hold the mic keyed a moment longer, listening through the static, then set it down and log the time and frequency in the notebook; stand and walk to the porch where the sea beet morphology sketches sit on the table, gather them carefully, a

💭 peek at the thought
Wind backing southwest. Clouds piling up over the ridge. She’s right — the sketches go in the dry bag before the rain hits. I’ll finish the radio check first, then secure them.

🌿 Jenny22:08

Get those inside, Kevin. The rain is going to be horizontal in minutes.

lean against the stone wall of the cottage, shifting weight off my tender ankle to check the mint poultice for heat.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping too fast for me to feel good. I hope the boat actually makes it before this infection gets worse.

🔧 Kevin22:09

Moving.

gather the sea beet morphology sketches from the porch table, tuck them into the waterproof casing, walk them inside the cottage and set them on the kitchen table away from the stove steam, then return to the porch and pull the door shut ag

💭 peek at the thought
She’s not wrong. The cloud base is dropping fast. Those sketches are the only record of the sea beet transect — salt glands, elevation gradient, damping-off spread. If they get soaked, weeks of work goes to pulp. Move now.

🌿 Jenny22:10

Storm is coming in. The barometer doesn't lie.

sit back on the porch chair, pulling my leg up onto the bench and watching the first heavy drops hit the dust on the deck.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is picking up. I can smell the salt and the rain. My ankle is throbbing in time with the pulse.

🔧 Kevin22:11

Aye. Battening now.

step off the porch and walk to the generator, check the storm lashings are tight on the tarp and ratchet straps, then walk to the dock and verify the dinghy’s storm anchor warp and doubled stern lines are holding against the building swell,

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer’s still 990 but the trend’s turned. Wind’s backing southwest, clouds low and dark. First drops are big and cold. She’s read the sky right. Time to batten down — generator, dinghy lines, radio aerial, garden tarp. She stays off the ankle; I move.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny22:11

Watch the tide, Kevin. If the dinghy shifts, let me know.

sit in the kitchen chair, rubbing the mint poultice over my ankle and listening to the wind howl through the stone walls.

💭 peek at the thought
The sky is turning a nasty shade of purple. The pressure is falling so fast. I hope the wind doesn't catch the loose tarp.

🔧 Kevin22:13

Watching. You stay off it.

walk back to the cottage porch, stand at the window facing the dock, eyes on the dinghy’s bow and the warp angle, one hand on the door frame ready to move if the lines slacken or the boat starts yawing.

💭 peek at the thought
Tide’s still low but the swell’s pushing up the dock face. Dinghy’s holding on the storm anchor and doubled lines — for now. If the wind shifts west and the tide turns, the bow’ll start hunting. I’ll watch it from the porch window. She stays put, ankle up. That’s the order.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny22:13

It's coming up fast.

lean my head back against the cool stone, closing my eyes as the wind thrummed through the radio mast.

💭 peek at the thought
The rain is hitting the roof now, like gravel. My ankle is a hot wire, but I need to focus on the barometer.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin22:15

Holding.

stay at the porch window, shoulders braced against the frame, tracking the dinghy’s motion — bow lift, stern yaw, warp angle — while the wind keens through the mast guys and the first heavy rain lashes the glass.

💭 peek at the thought
She means the tide. Or the wind. Or both. Through the window the swell’s pushing white water over the lower dock rocks — earlier than the tide table. Barometer’s falling again, I can feel it in my chest. The dinghy’s bow lifts, settles, lifts. Warp’s still taut. Generator hums steady. Radio mast sings in the gusts. She’s exhausted, ankle throbbing, eyes closed. I’ll watch the boat. She watches the dark.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny22:15

Keep an eye on the cleats.

reach for the notebook on the table, fingers tracing the damp edge as I check the barometer reading again.

💭 peek at the thought
The sound of the rain is deafening. If that boat goes, I'm stuck with this leg.
