Storm watch and second radio attempt

Rain lashes the cottage horizontally. Wind keens through the radio mast guys. Kevin stands at the porch window watching the dinghy ride the swell, warp taut. Jenny sits at the kitchen table with her ankle elevated, notebook open, tin mug cooling beside her. The barometer reads 990 hPa, steady. It is 1900. Kevin lifts the mic for the second scheduled call to Tom.

The air pressure continues to drop as the barometer hits 991 hPa, signaling the accelerating approach of the storm. The tide is rising, pulling the water hard against the dock's pilings. Inside the cottage, the atmosphere is heavy with humidity and the smell of damp wood and drying herbs.

🌿 Jenny22:17

The barometer is holding, Kevin. Check the lines again.

Picks up a pencil and traces the cellular structure of the sea beet leaf in the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
If the pressure doesn't bottom out, the boat won't make it through the channel.

🔧 Kevin22:17

Tom, this is Kevin on Sorrel. Over.

Key the mic, wait for response, then lower it and step off the porch to check the dinghy’s mooring lines and storm anchor warp for chafe or slip.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure’s steady at 990 — no drop yet, but the wind’s screaming and the rain’s sideways. Tom’s not answering, but I’ve got to keep the schedule. If the barometer holds below 990 with thickening cloud, rain comes within six hours — we’re already in it. I’ll check the dinghy lines after this call, like Jenny said.

🌿 Jenny22:19

Watch out for the seaward line, the tide is pulling hard.

Presses her palm against her ankle, feeling the mint poultice cool the throbbing skin.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so worried about the hardware while the salt is eating the wood.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin22:19

Copy that.

Walk down the slick dock planks to the dinghy, flashlight beam cutting rain, inspect the seaward stern line at the piling fairlead and the breast line to the north piling for chafe, test tension by hand, then check the storm anchor warp off

💭 peek at the thought
Tide’s rising hard, wind’s driving the dinghy bow-on but the stern’s swinging. Seaward line takes the load. I’ll check the chafe point at the piling and the breast line — if one parts, the other won’t hold her alone.

🌿 Jenny22:21

Don't stay out too long, the barometer is still dropping.

Turns the page in the notebook, avoiding the damp Edge of the sea beet sketches.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to get wiped out if the swell is that high.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin22:21

Won’t.

Finish checking the breast line and storm anchor warp, make sure the chafe guard on the seaward stern line hasn’t shifted, then walk back up the dock to the porch and close the door behind me.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s right — I felt it in my chest before I saw the needle. 990 and falling slow. The dinghy’s riding hard, lines singing. If it drops below 980 with the wind backing west, it’ll go violent. I’ve seen it. Check the lines fast, get back inside.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny22:23

The barometer is at 988. It's going to get worse.

Watch the rain hit the window, my ankle throbbing in time with the wind.

💭 peek at the thought
He's shivering. I can see it through the glass.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin22:23

Aye. Radio mast’s the weak point. Guys are tight but the insulator’s gone. If the mast comes down, we’re blind.

Pull the spare coax roll from the porch shelf, check the mast base and guys by flashlight — see if the new insulator I fitted yesterday is holding or if the ceramic’s cracking under the load.

💭 peek at the thought
988. Dropping two millibars in ten minutes. Wind’s already horizontal. If it breaks 980 with the west back, the anchorage turns to soup and the dinghy won’t care about lines. Generator’s tarped, garden’s weighted, seed tin’s dry. Only thing left is the radio aerial — insulator’s shattered, coax is new but the mast guys are singing. If the mast goes, we lose comms entirely.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny22:25

Check the bolts again. The wind is shaking the whole cottage.

adjust the mint poultice on my ankle, wincing as the pressure hits the infection.

💭 peek at the thought
If that mast goes, I can't call the boat. We're stranded.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin22:26

Checking now.

Step back onto the porch, flashlight on the mast base — inspect the four 150mm stainless through-bolts at the bracket heel and the two at the step for movement, washers biting, any fresh epoxy dust or wood crush.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s not wrong — the whole structure’s breathing. Mast bracket’s through-bolted but the spruce step’s only epoxy and doubler plate. If the mast pumps, the bolts will work loose in the grain. I checked them yesterday but not under this load. Need eyes on the base and the bracket heel.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny22:27

Be careful. The greenheart is turning to mush there.

Watch the barometer drop to 987 hPa. The wind is screaming.

💭 peek at the thought
The wood is too soft. I can see the fibers yielding under the tension.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin22:27

Spruce step, not greenheart. But I'm looking.

Crouch at the mast base on the porch, flashlight beam tight on the bracket bolts — check each nyloc for backing off, tap the washers with the 19mm wrench to feel for movement, watch the spruce grain around the holes for fresh crush or epoxy

💭 peek at the thought
Greenheart doesn't turn to mush — but the old spruce step might. She's thinking of the dock pilings. Mast step is spruce with epoxy and a doubler plate. If the bracket's pumping, the bolts will wallow the holes. 987 and screaming. Need to see if the nuts have backed off or the washers are cutting in.
