← Day 462

Apart — Kevin at the keeper's cottage, Jenny at the north cliffs

Midday radio watch and cliff survey

Kevin is at the cottage working the shortwave radio; Jenny is on the north cliffs scanning the horizon.

Kevin called Tom on the shortwave but only heard a mainland talk show. He logged the attempt and went to the dock to inspect the seaward bolts and north piling shim. Jenny finished her observations at the north cliffs, checked the barometer, and began walking back to the cottage with her ankle wrapped.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the keeper's cottage

You sit at the radio table, headphones on, keying the shortwave on Tom's frequency at the top of the hour. The grey light through the window shows the sea state worsening — whitecaps stacking outside the reef. The generator hums steady behind you.

🔧 Kevin21:55

Tom, this is Sorrel Island, day four-six-two. Fourteen hundred. Barometer nine-eight-nine rising last check. Sea state worsening — whitecaps past the reef. Dock secure. Dinghy storm anchor holding. Supply boat due in two days. Over.

key the shortwave on Tom's frequency, headphones on, watching the needle for any skip

💭 peek at the thought
The sea's coming up fast. Whitecaps past the reef means swell's building from the west. Barometer was 989 rising last I looked — but that was an hour ago. If it's turning, the supply boat won't make the crossing in two days. Tom's frequency is quiet. Always quiet. But I said every hour. So I key it again.

🔧 Kevin21:59

Kevin — pull off headphones, log the call in the radio notebook with time and conditions, walk to the porch to read the barometer

💭 peek at the thought
Static. Same as 1000, 1200. The generator's steady drone is the only answer. I'll log the call and check the barometer again — if the pressure's turned, the supply boat's not coming. Need to know before I commit diesel to the generator tonight.

🔧 Kevin22:03

Kevin — note the barometer reading in the log, grab the heavy wrench and head down to the dock to check the seaward bolts and north piling shim while there's still light

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer's at 986 and falling. Dropped three millibars in an hour. West swell building. The supply boat won't cross in this — not with a falling glass and wind backing west. We're on our own longer. Diesel's tight at eight days generator-only. Need to stretch it. And the dock's seaward bolts need checking before the tide turns.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the north cliffs

You stand on the north cliff path, binoculars braced against the wind, scanning the grey horizon for the supply boat. The path is slick with salt spray; the cairns you built for the Carex transect stand like markers against the sky. Your ankle protests with each shift of weight.

🌿 Jenny21:54

Jenny — adjust the focus on the binoculars and scan the horizon where the sea meets the sky.

💭 peek at the thought
If that boat doesn't show in two days, I'll be out of antibiotics. The pressure is at ninety-nine, but the air feels heavy anyway.

🌿 Jenny21:57

Jenny — check the barometer one last time and start the slow limp back toward the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
The clouds are thickening too fast. I need to get those sketches inside before the humidity ruins the paper.

🌿 Jenny22:01

Jenny — wrap the bandage tighter around the ankle and push the door open.

💭 peek at the thought
Kevin will be pacing by the radio again. I can feel his worry before I even reach the door.
