The Calm Before Breaks

They meet inside the cottage as the first heavy gusts of wind pick up, bringing the smell of salt and ozone. The barometer begins to drop again.

The air in the cottage is heavy as the sky darkens a bruised purple. Jenny sits on the chair, knuckles white, as Kevin works the abscess on her ankle. The incision is deep, and the release of pressure is immediate, though the foul smell fills the small room briefly. Outside, the wind picks up, carrying the cry of a fallen seabird chick struggling on the rocks far below.

🌿 Jenny22:57

The barometer is dropping again. We need to move the seeds to the highest shelf.

Winces as she shifts her weight, reaching for the seed tin.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is falling too fast; if that boat doesn't show tomorrow, I'm going to be trapped in here.

🔧 Kevin22:57

I'll move them. You sit.

step between her and the seed tin, one hand on her shoulder guiding her back toward the chair

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving too fast on that ankle. The red lines were tracking toward her knee this morning — if the infection's hit the lymphatics she shouldn't be on her feet at all. But she's right about the seeds and the barometer. 989 and falling fast. The storm's not waiting.

🌿 Jenny22:59

I can stand fine, Kevin. The tin is getting damp down here.

Pulls her hand back and sits heavily into the chair, watching him take the tin.

💭 peek at the thought
He treats me like a pressed flower that's going to crumble if the wind blows too hard.

🔧 Kevin22:59

Tin's sealed with the tape. It's not getting damp in the next hour. Show me the ankle.

set the seed tin on the table, crouch in front of her chair, reach for the brace fastenings

💭 peek at the thought
She's stubborn. Good. That's what kept her alive this long. But the swelling above the brace is new since this morning and she's favouring the left hip — compensating. The seeds can wait thirty seconds while I check the dressing properly.

🌿 Jenny23:01

It's just tender. The poultice should be working by now.

Breathes through teeth and begins to loosen the gauze on the ankle brace.

💭 peek at the thought
The infection is throbbing in time with the wind; I hate how vulnerable it makes me feel.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin23:01

Let me be the judge of that.

peel back the gauze slowly, fingers gentle but thorough, eyes tracking the red lines up her calf

💭 peek at the thought
She's downplaying it. The heat coming off that joint before I even touch it — and the smell cutting through the mint poultice — tells me the metronidazole isn't winning. If the streaks have passed the knee, oral antibiotics won't cut it. We don't have IV. We don't have a boat coming for days in this weather. I need to see how far the cellulitis has tracked.

🌿 Jenny23:03

Don't be so dramatic. The barometer is at 989 and falling.

Flinches as the air hits the skin, looking away at the darkening window.

💭 peek at the thought
If it spreads any further, I won't be able to get to the north ridge tomorrow.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin23:03

It's past your knee. I'm lancing it. Then we're calling for the boat.

hands steady, thumbs pressing either side of the swelling at her ankle to find the pocket of pus, reaching for the scalpel on the table

💭 peek at the thought
The red streaks have crossed the knee. Hot to the touch three inches above the brace line. Lymphangitic spread — she's septic or heading there fast. The metronidazole and doxy aren't penetrating the tissue. She's burning through her reserves fighting this and the storm hasn't even hit yet. I need to lance any fluctuance, pack it, and get the last of the Flagyl into her. And I need to get the radio working — the insulator's shot but maybe I can jury-rig something with the spare coax and the old ceramic. If I can raise the supply boat or coastguard, we need a medevac. Today.

🌿 Jenny23:05

Don't call anyone yet. It's just pressure. Just do it.

Grips the edge of the kitchen chair, knuckles white, watching the blade glint in the low light.

💭 peek at the thought
If he calls the boat now, I'm stuck in a hospital for a month and the seeds will rot.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin23:05

Hold still.

pierce the abscess at the point of maximum tension, let the pus drain into the waiting gauze, work the cavity clean with saline-soaked swabs

💭 peek at the thought
She's terrified of the radio call — of what it means to admit we can't handle this. But she's also right that the pressure needs releasing first. The fluctuance is obvious, tense and shiny over the medial malleolus. I'll drain it, pack it, give her the last metronidazole, then I'm making the call whether she likes it or not. The barometer's dropping faster now. Wind's backing southwest. This storm's going to trap us here for days.
