The Calm Before the Supply Boat

The rain continues to fall as the sun sets, the tide recedes, and they prepare for the arrival of the boat tomorrow.

The flat sky thickens as the pressure holds at 990 hPa. The tide is receding rapidly, exposing the slick rocks and the base of the decaying dock planks. A pale bloom of jellyfish has drifted into the bay, bobbing rhythmically in the increasing swell.

Kevin — check the dinghy breast line and stern spring at the dock, then secure the porch shutter against the west wind

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer holding at 990. Tide's turning. If the supply boat makes it through the swell tomorrow, Jenny's letter reaches Tom. If it doesn't, I'll be back on this frequency at 1900. Either way, the radio's ready. The garden's battened. The dinghy's double-lined. Jenny's asleep on the porch with the tin mug still warm beside her. She didn't eat much. Ankle's hot through the bandage. I'll check it again at midnight.

Check the way again when you go. It is still dropping.

De-dress the ankle, apply a fresh mint poultice, and wrap in clean

💭 peek at the thought
If that boat doesn't show tomorrow, I'm out of clean gauze and this infection will take the bone.

🔧 Kevin22:53

Aye. Midnight check too.

walk to the dock in the rain, check the mooring ring shift against the knife mark on the piling, inspect the breast line chafe at the fairlead, then return to the cottage

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Barometer was 990 at noon, 988 at 1600. Dropping two millibars in four hours with the wind backing southwest means the low's deepening faster than forecast. The supply boat won't make the crossing if it drops another five. I'll walk the dock line on the way back, check the mooring ring movement against my knife mark.

🌿 Jenny22:53

Don't forget the barometer. The pressure is falling fast.

Move the heirloom seed tin to the highest shelf, away from the damp wall.

💭 peek at the thought
He's obsessed with the hardware while the sky is literally collapsing on us.

🔧 Kevin22:55

Got it. Generator fuel, tank vent, liferaft seal. Then the radio.

check the barometer on the kitchen wall, note the reading, then secure the generator fuel drum to the porch rail with the heavy weather line

💭 peek at the thought
She's tracking it closer than I am. 988 to 984 in two hours if her pace holds. That's not a gale, that's a proper storm. The supply boat's not coming tomorrow. Need to secure the generator fuel drum, lash the water tank vent, check the liferaft canister seal she asked about. And the radio — if the aerial insulator holds, I'll try Tom at 1900. If it doesn't, I'll have to rig the spare coax to the garden fork mast.

🌿 Jenny22:55

It's at 991 and falling. It's going to be heavy.

Sketch the cell structure of the sea beet leaves before the light fails completely.

💭 peek at the thought
He treats the storm like a checklist, but the island is breathing.
