The Storm Deepens
The wind is a constant roar now and the tide has reached high mark. The cottage shakes slightly under the pressure of the gusts.
The rain lashing against the cottage walls is a steady, rhythmic drumming that fills the air. Inside, the water tank has reached its absolute 400-litre capacity, threatening to overflow if not vented. The barometer continues its slow dip to 991 hPa, signaling a deepening of the system despite the dry season label.
Kevin — walk down to the dock, pull the hood up against the spray, and check the breast line at the fairlead and the mooring ring mortise.

Kevin, get back inside! The pressure is dropping too fast!
Grab the window frame to take the weight off my left foot, watching the waves break over theings.

Checking the chafe point. Two minutes.
Crouch at the fairlead, pull the Dyneema breast line through my hands to feel for wear at the contact point, then check the mooring ring movement against the knife mark I made earlier.

The tide is at the pilings! The wind is screaming!
Limp to the table, grab the heavy shears and the seed tin, just in case.

Breast line's burning through at the fairlead. Ring's shifted another mil. Re-leading it to the starboard piling base. Get the radio log ready — if the mast goes, we lose the aerial. (shouting over the wind) Radio log. Top shelf. Put it in the dry bag with the seed tin.
Pull the bitter end of the Dyneema breast line, uncleat it, and re-lead it around the base of the starboard piling where the angle's cleaner, then cleat it off hard and set a watch knot.

I'm getting the log! Just watch out for the swell!
Move to the shelf, snatch the radio log and the seed tin, and shove them into the waterproof dry bag.

(shouting) Ring's still moving. Wedges are holding but the mortise is widening. When the tide turns, the load flips — that's when it pulls out.
Grab the come-along from the dock locker, hook it to the mooring ring's eye, and tension it against the south piling to take the load off the mortise while the tide slackens.

I'll check the way! Just keep that tension tight!
Move to the window, leaning heavily on my good leg, to watch the needle drop.
