← Day 470

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the woods

Midday storm watch and Yanmar test

Kevin is at the dock preparing to fire the Yanmar at load in the dinghy; Jenny is in the woods gathering wild mint and edible greens along the cottage-to-spring path.

Kevin tested the Yanmar under load at the dock, confirming the vibration fix held through hard turns at half throttle. Jenny gathered wild mint in the woods and rested against a screw pine, her ankle still painful but the infection line stable.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

You stand on the dinghy's gunwale, rain slick on the deck, the Yanmar's key in your hand. The engine mount bolts you fitted are tight, the bronze sleeve on the prop shaft spins true, but the mast bracket alignment still nags — slightly skewed despite the through-bolts. You check the storm anchor warp off the bow, 50m of heavy line paid out to the mooring ring, then reach for the starter cord.

🔧 Kevin05:27

Kevin — loosen the four mast bracket through-bolts, sight the mast from keel to truck, adjust alignment, retighten bolts to 35Nm. Key the Yanmar and crank.

💭 peek at the thought
The mast bracket’s still off — just a few degrees, but it’ll heel the sail and chafe the line. I’ll loosen the bolts, sight down the mast from the keel, and true it before I fire her up. No point testing load if the rig’s fighting me.

🔧 Kevin05:31

Kevin — cast off the bow line, engage forward gear, motor out to the end of the storm anchor warp, put the helm hard over both ways at half throttle, watch for vibration and shroud movement.

💭 peek at the thought
Engine caught first pull. Runs smooth at idle — no vibration, no smoke. The bronze sleeve held. Now I need to put her under load, see if the prop shaft alignment holds when the prop bites water. The dinghy's light without Jenny in it, but I'll motor out past the mooring ring, turn hard to starboard and port, watch the telltales on the shrouds.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the woods

You move slowly along the cottage-to-spring path, ankle braced and throbbing, basket hooked over your arm. Wild mint grows thick in the damp hollows near the spring, and salt-tolerant succulents cling to the rocky edges — you know every patch. The rain has eased to a drizzle under the canopy, but the wind shakes the treetops.

🌿 Jenny05:25

way, Jenny. Just one step.

Harvest a few large sprigs of wild mint and place them in the basket.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping too fast; if the boat doesn't come in four days, I'm stuck with this leg.

🌿 Jenny05:29

Jenny — lean against a screw pine trunk to catch my breath.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is throbbing with every step, I need to get back before the light fails completely.
