The Turning Tide

As the tide begins to turn, the first waves lap against the dock pilings. The rain intensifies slightly, and the barometer continues its slow descent.

The humidity is heavy as the flat sky darkens, and the smell of salt fills the air. The tide is rising, lapping higher against the lower pilings of the dock. Kevin returns from his inspection, wiping salt-spray from his face, while Jenny watches from the porch, her ankle throbbing in time with the encroaching water.

I’m heading down to check the piling. Stay off the dock if it gets slick.

walk down the dock to the south piling, watching my step on the wet planks, and crouch to inspect where the greenheart shims meet the timber base as the first waves lap against it.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer’s still falling, tide’s turning — I need to check the south piling before the scour gets worse. Jenny’s ankle’s holding, but I won’t risk her out here in this wet. I’ll go alone.

Watch the rot on the edge, they are softer than they look.

lean against the cottage doorway, shifting my weight to my good ankle, and watch him through the grey light.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to slip and break his neck on those rocks while he's playing with the wood.

Noted. I’ll sister it proper before the next spring tide.

press the blade of my knife into the damp edge of the south piling’s lowest sound timber, feeling the fibres crumble, then stand and scan the mortise where the mooring ring sits — wedges still tight, no new play — before turning back toward

💭 peek at the thought
She’s right. The outer face of that plank’s gone punky — I felt it give under the crowbar yesterday but didn’t say. She sees more than she lets on.

way make sure the bolts are deep; the salt has gotten into the grain.

pull the notebook from my pocket and make a quick sketch of the barometer reading's curve.

💭 peek at the thought
"Proper" is a heavy word for someone who hasn't seen the depth of this rot.

🔧 Kevin06:23

I’ll re-check the lower bolts at low water tomorrow. If they’re shy, I’ll drill deeper and epoxy-set new ones.

tap the 19mm wrench against the exposed bolt heads on the seaward face of the piling, listening for the hollow ring of a bolt bottomed in rot, then climb back up the dock toward the cottage, wiping rain from my face.

💭 peek at the thought
Salt in the grain — she’s not wrong. The through-bolts I drove last week bit into sound wood, but the lower ones might not have reached past the rot line. Need to check torque and depth before the next surge.

🌿 Jenny06:23

Use the epoxy liberally; the salt is already eating the inside out.

watch him climb the stairs, feeling the heat throbbing in my ankle with every pulse of the tide.

💭 peek at the thought
If he drills deeper without checking the heartwood, he'll just make a hole in the foundation.
