Morning Rain and Salt

Kevin and Jenny stand under the shade cloth as the warm rain patters against the tomato rows. Kevin checks the tension on the garden wall while Jenny sorts the de-salted sea beet leaves on the kitchen table.

The morning rain continues in warm, intermittent bursts, soaking the garden and making the air heavy. The tide is high, lapping against the newly reinforced dock pilings, while the barometer shows a slow rise in pressure, suggesting the worst might be moving out despite the wetness.

Wall's solid. Two courses, proper lime mortar. She'll hold.

lean against the garden wall, arms crossed, watching the tomato rows

💭 peek at the thought
The shade cloth's holding. Rain's warm enough it won't shock the tomatoes. Wall's two courses up and the mortar's cured — she'll take a proper storm now. Jenny's hands are steady on the sea beet. Good.

🌿 Jenny06:59

Good. I need to finish the sea beet before it's too late.

Jenny picks up a sharp knife and begins to trim the wilted edges off the sea beet leaves.

💭 peek at the thought
He's talking about stones while my leg is literally rotting off the bone.

🔧 Kevin07:01

Keep the blade flat. Less waste that way.

step closer to the kitchen window, lean on the sill to watch her hands without crowding her

💭 peek at the thought
She's focused. Knife's sharp. Don't want her nicking herself on a dull edge. Watch the angle — she's cutting away from her hand, good form.

🌿 Jenny07:01

I'm aware, Kevin.

Jenny stops cutting for a second, feeling the heat throbbing in her ankle, then resumes the work with forced precision.

💭 peek at the thought
I know how to use a knife. I'm a botanist.

🔧 Kevin07:03

You've been at it twenty minutes. Let me take over. Your ankle's talking.

hold out my hand for the knife, palm up, waiting for her to release it

💭 peek at the thought
She's pushing through the pain. Ankle's swollen again — I saw her wince when she shifted her weight. She won't say it, but it's bad. Need to get the poultice back on soon. She's proud, though. Won't stop till it's done.

🌿 Jenny07:03

I'm almost done with the de-salting.

Jenny tightens her grip on the knife, her knuckles white, as she stares down at the sea beet leaves.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks I'm incompetent because I'm in pain.
