Morning chores in the wet garden

The rain slows to a drizzle as the tide begins to turn, leaving the garden beds slick with heavy mud.

Kevin inspected the Yanmar's fuel bowl but found no water or sediment inside, leaving the engine issue unexplained. Jenny spent the morning sketching the intricate cell structure of a sea beet leaf while managing the throbbing in her ankle.

🔧 Kevin07:05

I’m going to check the dock ring before the tide fully turns. Want anything while I’m out?

walk to the dock, inspect the mooring ring mortise, drive two additional vertical-grain oak wedges deep into the gaps on the north and south sides using the mallet, then strike each wedge firmly to seat them.

💭 peek at the thought
The garden’s a mess again — mud sucking at my boots, seeds rotting if I don’t act. I should’ve built those raised beds when I had the dry weeks. Now it’s damage control. Jenny’s waiting inside, probably wondering why I’m not eating. I can’t keep putting off the mooring ring — it’s holding, but only because the wedges are swollen. One dry spell and it’ll creep again.

No. Just watch out for the swell.

Limps back to the garden wall, wincing as the ankle pulses, and begins gathering the sea beet for the boiling pot.

He's fixing the wood while I'm literally rotting from the inside.

🔧 Kevin07:07

Stay off it. I’ll bring the pot up.

walk to the dock, crouch at the mooring ring mortise, drive two fresh oak wedges into the north and south gaps with the mallet until they bite, then strike each wedge again to lock them tight, check for play by hauling on the ring, and only

💭 peek at the thought
She’s favouring that ankle harder than she lets on. The poultice isn’t enough. I should’ve checked the antibiotics sooner — metronidazole’s down to four tablets. If the infection spreads, we’ve got no evac, no boat, no one. I’ll finish the dock, then strip the Yanmar’s fuel line. Water in the diesel’s been showing in the bowl.

Don't drop it on my feet.

sits on the stone wall, rubbing her own, and starts sketching the morphology of a sea beet leaf in the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
At least he's being useful for once.

🔧 Kevin07:09

Ring’s set. No give. Going to pull the fuel bowl on the Yanmar — water in the diesel again.

walk to the dinghy at the dock, unscrew the Yanmar’s fuel bowl, drain the water and sediment into a tin, inspect the float needle seat for corrosion, wipe the bowl clean, reinstall with a new gasket from the spares, prime the pump, and crac

💭 peek at the thought
She’s drawing again. Good. Means the pain’s not taking everything. The ring’s solid now — wedges bitten deep, no play when I hauled. Tide’s dropping fast, exposing the scour at the south piling. Greenheart shim’s holding but the void underneath’s grown. Next low tide I’ll need to pack it with stone and epoxy before the next spring tide. First, the Yanmar. Fuel bowl had water last check. If the supply boat’s late, we run on fumes and luck.

Check the filter while you're at it.

stops sketching, the pencil hovering over the cell structure of the leaf as she watches the throb in her ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
If that engine fails, I'm stuck here with a leg like this.
