Afternoon storm prep

The flat sky has begun to darken, and the air is heavy with the scent of coming wet-season rain. Kevin arrives at the cottage as Jenny is entering, both needing to discuss the supply boat arrival and the thickening cloud cover.

Kevin tested the mooring ring under load and found it secure. Jenny prepared sea beet leaves for cooking and re-wrapped her ankle with mint poultice. Both returned to the cottage as rain intensified.

🌿 Jenny08:43

It's turning over. Did you check the tide again?

lean heavily against the stone doorwayframe, shifting weight away from my left ankle while wincing.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is holding, but if that boat doesn't show tomorrow, I'm going to be out of antibiotics and out of patience.

🔧 Kevin08:43

Tide's coming in. Ring held at low. Want me to walk the dock at high water?

walk to the porch rail and scan the waterline on the pilings

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring the ankle again. Tide's rising — barometer steady at 991. Supply boat's due tomorrow if it comes. Need to check the mooring ring one more time at high water.

🌿 Jenny08:45

Do what you want. Just don't fall in; I'm in no state to drag you out of the surf.

limp slowly into the kitchen and sink into the chair, resting my ankle on a stool.

💭 peek at the thought
He's obsessed with that ring. The dock isn't the only thing on this island that's precarious.

🔧 Kevin08:45

I'll go slow. Just need to see if the ring's shifted under load. Be back before dark.

walk to the dock, stop at the mooring ring, and press down on it with my weight to test for movement

💭 peek at the thought
She's tired. Ankle's swollen again. I should check the dock, but not rush it. Mooring ring's been stable with the wedges and plate — still, I owe it to look.

🌿 Jenny08:47

way be careful. The rain's going to get worse.

reach for the bowl of sea beet on the table, checking the salt levels with a tired eye.

💭 peek at the thought
If that ring pulls out, the whole system is compromised. Just like this leg. I can barely hold the pencil.

🔧 Kevin08:47

I will.

press down hard on the mooring ring with both hands, then lean full weight on it, watching the mortise for any fresh shine or movement

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching me go. The ring's held through two tide cycles with the wedges and doubler plate — but supply boat's weight is different. Rain's thickening. I'll test it proper, then get back.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny08:49

Don't stay out late if the rain really starts.

pick up a leaf of sea beet, wincing as the movement sends a sharp spike through my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to break himself trying to prove a piece of metal is solid while I'm rotting from the inside.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin08:49

Ring's fast. Coming in.

turn and walk back to the cottage, wiping salt from my hands on my trousers

💭 peek at the thought
Ring's solid. No movement in the mortise, no fresh shine on the wedges or plate. The doubler's holding. Tide's still rising but the structure's sound. Time to get back before the rain hits hard.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny08:51

Just get back inside. The light is dropping fast. continuedDO: set the sea much down and rub the swollen skin around my ankle, trying to ignore the heat.

💭 peek at the thought
At least the ring is holding for now. But if the boat doesn't come tomorrow, I'm out of options.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin08:51

You need the ankle re-wrapped. Got mint left?

step inside, close the door against the rain, and go to the first aid kit on the shelf

💭 peek at the thought
She's hurting. Ankle's hot and swollen again. The poultice from this morning's worn off. I should re-wrap it, maybe freshen the mint if we've got any left. Rain's coming down proper now.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny08:53

It's in the tin. If the seeds stayed dry.

reach for the seed tin, my fingers trembling as I try to lift the lid.

💭 peek at the thought
I used the last of the poultice yesterday. I'm out of everything that helps.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin08:53

Mint's on the porch rail. Seed tin's sealed. I'll get both.

step back onto the porch, grab the mint sprigs from the rail, then return to the first aid kit for fresh gauze and antiseptic cream

💭 peek at the thought
She's confusing the mint with the seeds. The mint's drying on the porch rail — if the rain hasn't ruined it. The seed tin's sealed with tape and silica. Different things. I'll get the mint and the gauze.
