Offerings at the Stones

They walk the ridge path together, Kevin supporting Jenny’s weight as she favors her ankle. The rain has eased to a drizzle, the barometer steady at 991 hPa. The shrine stones stand dark and wet, carvings faint but legible in the fading light.

Kevin carried Jenny back from the shrine, her weight heavy on his shoulders as the light failed. They reached the cottage just as the drizzle intensified, the grey silhouette of the island fading into the humid dark.

🌿 Jenny08:56

Just a bit further, Kevin. I need to see the inscription on this one.

Lean heavily against Kevin's shoulder while tracing the worn edge of a stone with a trembling finger.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is throbbing in time with the tide; if the boat doesn't come tomorrow, this infection is going to reach the bone.

🔧 Kevin08:57

Take your time. I’ve got you.

walk slowly up the ridge path, supporting Jenny’s weight as she traces the stone’s edge with her finger

💭 peek at the thought
Her hand shakes but she’s determined. I can feel her weight leaning into me, the damp of her shirt through mine. This stone matters to her—more than just names carved in rock. I’ll get her there, then we’ll head back before the tide turns.

🌿 Jenny08:57

It's almost gone. The salt is eating the names.

pull a charcoal pencil from my pocket and quickly sketch the jagged outline of the stone ring before the light fails completely.

💭 peek at the thought
He's being kind, but kindness doesn't stop the heat radiating from my skin.

🔧 Kevin08:59

The pencil'll smudge in this damp. Want me to hold the notebook steady?

stand braced against the wind, one arm around Jenny's waist, the other hand hovering near her notebook to shield it from drizzle

💭 peek at the thought
She's racing the dark and the salt both. Smart to sketch it now — tomorrow the carving might be that much fainter. My thumb aches remembering the key, the old frequency, Tom's laugh bleeding through the weatherfax. She's preserving something. I should too.

🌿 Jenny08:59

Hold it low. Don't let the wind catch the edge.

shift my weight to my good leg, gritting as the infection pulses through my ankle, and focus on the charcoal meeting the damp paper.

💭 peek at the thought
If the paper curls, the whole survey is ruined, and I can't do this twice.

🔧 Kevin09:01

Not moving. Take the time you need.

crouch slightly to lower the notebook, bracing elbows against ribs, shielding the page with body and hands while the charcoal scratches paper

💭 peek at the thought
She's hurting more than she lets on. The pulse of it travels through where my arm holds her. She's mapping stones while her own body fights infection. I should've made her stay at the cottage. Too late now — she'd never have listened. Just keep her steady. Get the sketch done. Get her home.

🌿 Jenny09:01

The light is going too fast.

mark the date in the corner of the sketch, my hand shaking from the fever, and close the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping, I can feel it in my joints. If that boat doesn't show, I'm going to have to use the radio.

🔧 Kevin09:03

Let's get you back. Now.

rise slowly, slide one arm under Jenny's shoulders, the other supporting her elbow, and step off the ridge toward the cottage path, matching my pace to her limp

💭 peek at the thought
Fever's rising with the damp. She pushed too far. The sketch is done — date marked, stone ring captured before the dark. We need shelter, warmth, and that ankle cleaned again before night sets. No point lingering here. The shrine can wait.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny09:03

Okay. Just to the door.

lean full weight into Kevin, wincing as the ankle hits the way earth, and watch the grey silhouette of the island fade.

💭 peek at the thought
Every step is a hot needle in my skin. If I can't get to the cottage, the seeds are lost.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin09:05

Door's close. I've got you all the way.

walk steady on the cottage path, bearing Jenny's weight, boots finding the worn track in the dimming light

💭 peek at the thought
Full weight now. She's done fighting it. The fever heat radiates through her jacket into my side. Every step on that ankle costs her. I can feel the cottage pulling us forward — the stove, the antibiotics, the dry blankets. Just get her through the door. The rest can wait.
