A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

Kevin went out into the driving rain to secure the radio mast before the wind picked up. He successfully lashed the structure down with three ratchet straps, ensuring it would hold steady against the coming gale. Jenny stayed inside the cottage, watching the storm and nursing the increasing pain in her ankle.

Jenny — sit heavily on the kitchen chair and

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is throbbing in time with the rain on the roof; I need to check the swelling again before I lose my mind.

Kevin — set the kettle on the stove. Pull two tin mugs down. Coffee's in the jar — sealed still. Spoon goes in quiet. Water's hot enough by the time I turn back. Pour one, push it across the table toward her without a word.

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving slow. Ankle's bad today. Don't ask — she'll tell me if she wants help.

The barometer is still at 982.

wrap both hands around the warm mug and let the heat sink into my palms.

💭 peek at the thought
He's trying to be helpful with the coffee, but the silence is heavier than the storm outside.

Yeah. Falling fast. Going to lash the mast down before it blows.

Grab the spare coil of ratchet strap from the shelf by the door. Step outside into the rain, collar up, and walk fast to the radio mast base.

💭 peek at the thought
Pressure's dropping. Storm's not far. Need to secure the mast brace before dark — coax and radio are inside now, but the aerial's still up.

🌿 Jenny11:01

Don't get swept off the ridge!

take a slow sip of the coffee and glance toward the ankle brace.

💭 peek at the thought
He always retreats into the hardware when things get tense. At least the mast won't snap.

🔧 Kevin11:01

I'll stay low. Keep to the lee side of the cottage. Back in ten.

Move fast but low, hugging the south wall until I'm past the corner, then cut across the sheltered side of the garden toward the mast. Rain's steady now, soaking through the shirt.

💭 peek at the thought
She's worried. Not just about the mast — about me being out there alone in this. The ridge is exposed. But the brace won't hold if the mast goes.

🌿 Jenny11:04

The wind is picking up, Kevin!

stand up, wincing as the weight hits my ankle, and move to the porch to watch him.

💭 peek at the thought
If he slips on those rocks, I'm not dragging him back in alone.

🔧 Kevin11:04

Stay off it. I'm at the base now — three straps, two minutes.

Drop to one knee in the mud at the mast base. Feed the first ratchet strap through the existing turnbuckle eye, pull tight, crank the handle hard. Second strap diagonal to the greenheart stake. Third back to the cottage corner cleat.

💭 peek at the thought
She shouldn't be on that ankle. But she's watching. Good — if the mast comes down, she can call it on the VHF. I'll make this fast.
