The Falling Pressure

Kevin sits on the steps checking the barometer as the needle drops to 974 hPa. Jenny sits next to him, wrapping her swollen ankle while watching the clouds thicken over the north ridge. The air is heavy with the smell of coming salt rain.

Kevin spent the morning working on the shortwave radio, finally replacing the shattered insulator and testing the coax cable. Jenny focused on organizing the salvaged heirloom seeds and monitoring her ankle while the tide began to rise.

🌿 Jenny13:23

The barometer is going south again.

rubs the side of her ankle and stares out at the grey horizon.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast and my leg feels like it's being held in a vice; if that boat doesn't come in six days, I'm going to be dead before I ever see my grandmother's seeds.

🔧 Kevin13:23

Aye. 974 and holding steady for now.

tap the glass face of the barometer with one finger, then shift on the step to face the north ridge

💭 peek at the thought
She's stating the obvious. The needle's been falling since yesterday. Still, she's watching it with me instead of looking away.

🌿 Jenny13:25

It's never steady for long once it starts to fall.

reaches for the seed tin in her lap, tracing the cold metal edge.

💭 peek at the thought
Steady isn't enough when the sky is turning that color and my leg is throbbing with every heartbeat.

🔧 Kevin13:25

The generator's got fuel for three days if the diaphragm holds. Radio's got the new insulator seated. Dock's holding.

pull a tin mug from my pocket, blow across the rim, and hold it out toward her

💭 peek at the thought
Her fingers keep finding that tin. Three times this morning. She's not opening it, just... touching.

🌿 Jenny13:27

The dock isn't the problem.

takes the mug with shaking hands, the warmth seeping into her palms.

💭 peek at the thought
He talks about bolts and fuel because he doesn't want to look at the red streaks moving up my calf.

🔧 Kevin13:27

No. It isn't.

sit quiet, both hands wrapped around my own empty mug, watching the cloud line lower over the ridge

💭 peek at the thought
She knows what I know. The dock's the least of it. The injector pump's still bleeding air. The shaft vibration hasn't cleared. And she's not talking about the dock.

🌿 Jenny13:29

I need to change the poultice. It's warm.

shifts weight, wincing as the movement pulls against the injured skin.

💭 peek at the thought
If the way hits the knee, I won't even be able to walk to the spring.

🔧 Kevin13:29

I'll get the kit.

rise from the step and head inside to the first aid supplies on the kitchen shelf

💭 peek at the thought
She's been through worse and said less. The wince is the only sign she'll give. I should have the mint and gauze ready before she asks.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny13:31

okay. Bring the vinegar.

looks down at the seed tin, wondering if the seeds will still sprout if they stay damp for another month.

💭 peek at the thought
He's quiet today. He knows the swelling is getting worse than the own says.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin13:32

Got it.

grab the vinegar jar from the counter, the antibiotic cream, clean gauze, and the mint sprigs drying by the stove, then walk back to the porch

💭 peek at the thought
Vinegar for the poultice water — she wants it acidic to keep the wound from festering. Smart. The tin's sealed with tape; another month damp won't kill what's viable, but mold's the risk. I'll check the paper liners when I'm back out.
