MORNING DAY 478

You two meet in the kitchen to prepare a midday meal as the tide reaches the dock pilings.

Kevin and Jenny ate a breakfast of limpets and sea beets cooked in corned beef fat, then separated to their morning tasks as the barometer rose to 975 hPa.

🌿 Jenny13:33

The pressure is dropping. We should finish the limpets before the rain starts.

I rinse the limpets in cold water and set the iron skillet on the wood stove.

💭 peek at the thought
He's looking at the radio again. He needs to look at the barometer; the air is getting too heavy.

🔧 Kevin13:33

Skillet's hot. Fat rendered?

move to the stove, check the skillet, pull the tin of corned beef from the shelf

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the pressure. Barometer was 975 and falling last I checked. Rain'll be here within the hour if it keeps dropping. Limpets and corned beef fat again — not complaining, just noticing the pattern.

🌿 Jenny13:35

It's ready. Add the sea beets first so they can take up the salt.

I drop the chopped sea beets into the pan and listen for the hiss.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving too fast for his own good; the fat is shimmering just right.

🔧 Kevin13:35

Limpets going in now. Two minutes, then we eat.

add the limpets to the skillet, spread them out, turn the heat down slightly on the stove

💭 peek at the thought
Sea beets will wilt fast. Need to get the limpets in before they overcook. She's working the pan like she knows the rhythm — salt, fat, heat. Good. Just need to time it.

🌿 Jenny13:37

Don't overcook them or they'll be like rubber.

I grab my notebook and sit at the table, watching the steam rise.

💭 peek at the thought
Two minutes is never enough for these things to get tender, but I'm starving.

🔧 Kevin13:37

Timing it. One minute gone.

watch the pan, flip a limpet with the spatula to check the edges, pull two tin mugs from the shelf

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. Limpets go tough fast. Two minutes, maybe three. The steam smells like salt and iron and something almost sweet from the beets. My stomach's been growling since dawn.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny13:39

The smell is good. Pass the salt?

I adjust the bandage on my ankle, wincing at the throbbing under the poultice.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always with the watch. The island doesn't care about his minutes.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin13:39

Here. Don't overdo it — the sea beets already brought salt.

slide the salt tin across the table, keep an eye on the pan, lift the skillet lid to check the limpets' color

💭 peek at the thought
She's favoring it again. Poultice is helping, but the infection's still in there. Salt won't fix that — just the antibiotics. But she asked for salt, so I'll pass it. Doesn't cost me anything.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny13:41

I'll be careful.

I plate a small portion of sea beets and limpets, waiting for the signal to eat.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right about the salt. I'm too hungry to taste it anyway.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin13:41

Thirty seconds. Then we eat.

return the lid to the skillet, wait, then lift it again, nudge a limpet with the spatula to test firmness, turn off the stove under the pan

💭 peek at the thought
She's being careful with the salt. Smart. The limpets are just starting to curl at the edges — that's the sign. Any longer and they'll seize up. I'll give them thirty seconds more, then we eat. No point waiting for perfect when hunger's this sharp.
