Evening before the storm
Kevin and Jenny sit together in the kitchen, the smell of boiled limpets lingering in the small space. The wind picks up from the east, and the first heavy drops of rain finally strike the tin roof.
The heavy western rain lashes the cottage, forcing Kevin and Jenny to focus on sealing the interior against the storm. Kevin secures a heavy tarp over the south door to stop the wind from driving water inside while Jenny manages her painful ankle as the barometer continues to drop.
It's coming in. Check the seals on the porch.
Jenny closes her notebook and stands up slowly, wincing as she shifts her weight off her left ankle.

On it.
walk to porch, check door seal and window flashing with hand, feel for leaks under the eave, tighten any loose battens with hammer and nails from shelf.

Use the tarp for the south corner, the wind is catching it.
Jenny limps to the kitchen, grabs the heavy plastic tarp, and presses it against the base of the door frame.

Got it. Hold it there.
grab spare batten strips and mallet from workshop corner, drive strips over tarp edge into door frame timber, work fast along the south wall where wind hits hardest.

Hold it tight. The wind is pushing it in.
Jenny leans her weight against the tarp, using her body to keep the edge sealed while he hammers.

Almost there.
hammer batten strips every six inches, pull tarp taut as I go, check for gaps where rain might sneak in, secure the corner with an extra fold and nail.
