A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

The humid air hangs heavy over the cottage, the scent of salt and damp earth thick and oppressive. The barometer continues its slow descent to 975 hPa, signaling an inevitable shift in the weather. Outside, the tide is receding, leaving the tide pools slick and glistening, while the sound of the leaking water tank overflow echoes against the stone foundation.

(quietly, to the room) Right then.

walk to the wood stove and check the kettle, then set about heating water for tea and broth

💭 peek at the thought
The cottage feels different when you've been gone. Smaller. The radio's static hum fills the kitchen where the silence used to sit. My hands still smell of diesel and salt from the injector work. Jenny's asleep on the porch — can hear her breathing through the screen door. Ankle's wrapped fresh. Fever broke. She'll wake hungry.

Keep the tin of the heirloom seeds dry.

Sit on the edge of the kitchen chair, watching the steam rise, and tracing the pulse in my ankle through the gauze.

💭 peek at the thought
He's being helpful again, but the silence is louder than the stove. My leg is so heavy.

(pouring hot water into two mugs, voice low) They're in the dry bag with the radio. Double-wrapped. Saw you tracing the pulse — should've kept it elevated.

hand her a mug of tea, then pull the folding chair closer to sit beside her, keeping my voice even as I check the gauze for dampness or seepage

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching me like she's memorizing the way I move — not just the ankle, but the whole of me. Like she thinks this might be the last time she sees me whole. The heirloom seeds. She's worried about them getting damp again. Funny — she remembers the tin, but not to keep her own weight off that ankle.

🌿 Jenny15:53

I'll keep it up for now.

Take a slow sip of the tea, the warmth seeping into my palms, and look out at the half-weeded garden through the window.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks he can fix everything with a bandage and a wrench, but the heat is deep. I'm tired.

🔧 Kevin15:55

(after a pause, stirring my tea) We could start tomorrow. Just the first bed. Clear the marigold space, lay the cloth, put in the lettuce and basil. No promises beyond that.

set my mug down carefully, then reach over to gently adjust the edge of the garden tarp visible through the window with a fingertip — just enough to show I'm seeing it too, then turn back to her, waiting for her answer

💭 peek at the thought
She's not looking at me. She's looking at the garden — at the weeds choking the rows we meant to fill with color and scent. I said we'd build it. Never did. Just talked. Now she's seeing it for what it is: neglect. And she's not blaming me. That's worse.

🌿 Jenny15:57

If the fever breaks, maybe.

Lean my head against the stone wall, closing my eyes for a second while listening to the kettle hiss.

💭 peek at the thought
Tomorrow feels a lifetime away when your bones are throbbing. But I need the dirt.

🔧 Kevin15:57

(softly) Fever broke yesterday at four. You slept through it.

reach over and brush a strand of hair from her forehead, my thumb lingering on her temple — checking for heat — then pull my hand back slow, like I didn't mean it as a test

💭 peek at the thought
"If the fever breaks." Not "when." She's already bargaining. The infection's held for three days now — lanced twice, antibiotics down to five doses, and she's still measuring her days in maybes. I should've evacuated her when the streaks hit the knee. The forms are signed. The radio works. But she'd have refused. She's refusing still, just quietly.

🌿 Jenny15:59

I know.

Open my eyes and look at him, my hand tight around the warm mug.

💭 peek at the thought
He's checking me like a specimen in a jar. I just want to feel the soil.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin15:59

(quiet, rough) Five doses left. Two a day. That's two and a half days. If it's not gone by then —

stop myself, jaw tight, and pick up my own tea instead, blowing across the steam so I don't have to finish the sentence

💭 peek at the thought
She knows. She knew when it broke. She knew I watched her sleep. She knows I didn't call the boat. And she's not angry — just... here. Holding the mug like it's the only solid thing. Her eyes are clear. That's the part that gets me. Clear and steady, like she's already made peace with whatever comes.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny16:01

The boat comes in four days.

Look down at my ankle, the white gauze already beginning to yellow, and count the pulses in my wrist.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come with antibiotics, I'm just a gardener rotting in a cottage.
