Evening at the cottage

The humidity grows stifling as the sun dips below the overcast horizon. The drip of water against the floorboards continues, and the tide pulls further away from the shore.

Kevin struggles at the dock, forcing the 19mm wrench against the stubborn bolts of the steel doubler plate while the wood remains slick from the rising tide. Jenny sits on the porch steps, wincing as she peels back the damp gauze to find that the angry redness of the infection has crept slightly further toward her shin.

Kevin — walk to the back wall and inspect the tank overflow connection and mortar joints

💭 peek at the thought
The leak's getting worse. Tank's full but water's finding a path through the back wall mortar. Need to check the overflow pipe before dark — if the supply boat's coming in four days, we can't lose pressure.

🌿 Jenny16:03

Check the joint on the overflow pipe again, Kevin. The pressure is up.

Stand up slowly, wincing as the weight shifts own my ankle, and move to the porch to watch the clouds gather.

💭 peek at the thought
If that seal fails completely, we'll lose the water before the boat even arrives.

🔧 Kevin16:05

I'll check it now. Stay off it.

crouch at the tank base, wipe salt from the overflow joint, and inspect the copper fitting for cracks or seepage under pressure

💭 peek at the thought
She's on her feet despite the pain. She's not asking — she's telling me to fix it because she knows I won't rest until it's right. The joint's likely corroded again; salt creep in the copper fitting.

🌿 Jenny16:05

The barometer is dropping too fast for a storm coming harder than the last one.

Lean against the whitewashed stone, pulling my notebook from my pocket to sketch the way the clouds are bruising over the ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks it's just the fitting, but I can feel the vibration in the Stone.

🔧 Kevin16:07

Dock first. Then the pipe. You stay here.

grab the 19mm wrench and heavy weather line, head out the porch door toward the dock at low tide

💭 peek at the thought
She's reading the sky better than the glass. Northeast bruise, pressure falling — swell'll hit the dock before midnight. The ring's holding with wedges and doubler plate but the greenheart sister's floating on scoured void. If the surge lifts it wrong, the bolts shear.

🌿 Jenny16:08

Just don't forget theingsings, the tide is coming back fast.

Sit on the porch steps and unwrap the ankle dressing to check for new heat.

💭 peek at the thought
He always gives orders like the island is a machine he can just tighten.

🔧 Kevin16:09

Won't forget. Twenty minutes.

stride down the path to the dock, wrench in hand, heavy weather line coiled over shoulder

💭 peek at the thought
She caught the slip — "theingsings" — fever's still in her or the pain's scrambling words. Ankle's exposed, she's checking it herself. Good. Means she's tracking it. Tide turns in twenty minutes by the look of the waterline on the pilings. Dock ring, then back for the pipe.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny16:09

Be careful, the wood is slick.

Peel back the gauze slowly, flinching as it sticks to the wound, looking for the angry red of infection.

💭 peek at the thought
Twenty minutes is all it takes for a storm to turn or a pipe to burst.

🔧 Kevin16:11

Kevin — reach the dock, drop to knees on the planking, and loosen the four 150mm stainless through-bolts on the steel doubler plate to reset the mooring ring in its mortise

💭 peek at the thought
She's debriding alone. No flinch from me — she'd hate that. Focus on the dock. Slick wood, tide turning — need to torque those bolts before the surge lifts the ring again. Voids under the greenheart sister mean it's not bearing load; the ring's taking it all.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny16:11

Jenny — press a finger to the edge of the redness, watching for the spread of the infection toward the shin.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is throbbing in time with the tide, hot and angry. continuedSAY: It's getting worse.
