Approaching Storm

The flat sky turns a heavy grey as the wind picks up from the east. Kevin and Jenny gather in the cottage to prepare for the coming rain.

No narrator was available, so nothing about this stretch was recorded.

🌿 Jenny16:45

Kevin, check the garden way stakes again. The wind is shifting.

Reach for the antibiotic bottle on the nightstand and wince as I swallow the pill with water.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping again. If this storm hits before the boat comes, I'm stuck with a leg that won't carry me.

🔧 Kevin16:45

Already on it. Garden wall's two courses higher now — should hold. But I'll walk the perimeter.

walk to the garden to check stake tension and tarp corners

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's east and rising. Barometer's still climbing but the swell lag she's talking about — lines take load after pressure turns. She's right about the stakes. Tomato seedlings are barely rooted after the crab damage yesterday.

🌿 Jenny16:47

Watch the south corner of the tarp. It was catching the wind yesterday.

Pick up my way and draw the way the clouds are bruising over the ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks the wall will save the garden, but the infection is what's actually eroding me.

🔧 Kevin16:48

Right. South corner first.

walk the garden perimeter to the south corner, check tarp lashings and stake tension

💭 peek at the thought
South corner took the brunt yesterday. Oak stakes held but the shade cloth anchor points are shredded from the crab — tarp's only lashed to garden wall timbers there. If the wind backs southeast it'll peel.

🌿 Jenny16:49

Make sure the stakes are driven deep. I don't want those last seedlings lost.

Rub the poultice on my ankle, trying to dull the throb.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is falling too fast. If the rain starts now, the garden tarp is just a sail waiting to be ripped.

🔧 Kevin16:49

They're down to the oak wedges. I'll drive them another six inches with the mallet.

drive the oak stakes deeper at the south corner using the mallet, then re-lash the tarp corner with sail twine to the stake and timber strip

💭 peek at the thought
Those last seedlings are the pepper and basil — already chewed at the base, salt-stressed. If the tarp flaps and scours them, they're gone. Stakes need to be deep in this sandy loam, not just surface-set.

🌿 Jenny16:51

Check the knots twice. The salt air is already eating at the twine.

Watch him through the window, sketching the way the grass bends under the gust.

💭 peek at the thought
If the wind rips that tarp, the whole project is ruined, and I can't even get out there to help.

🔧 Kevin16:53

Double-lashing it. Round turn, two half-hitches, seized.

re-tie the south corner tarp lashing with a round turn and two half-hitches on the stake, seize the tail with a constrictor knot, then tug-test both stakes and the timber strip anchor

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. Salt and UV eat sail twine in weeks. The south corner lashing was fresh yesterday but the wind's been working it all night. Better to double it with a round turn and two half-hitches, then seize the tail.

🌿 Jenny16:54

It looks tight for now. The way isn't lying.

Shift my leg on the pillows, wincing as the pain spikes in my calf.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so focused on the knots, he doesn't see the heat coming off my skin.

🔧 Kevin16:55

I'll check the dock mooring while the tide's falling. Keep the poultice loose — let it breathe.

walk to the dock to inspect the mooring ring and cedar wedges under load from the falling tide and rising swell

💭 peek at the thought
Tarp's secure for now but the wind's picking up. Barometer's still rising but the east wind means swell lag — dock lines will take load soon. Need to check the mooring ring before the tide turns. She's in pain but won't say it. Antibiotic's in — metronidazole and doxycycline. Fever broke last night but the infection's still tracking.
