Low tide structural inspection

Kevin and Jenny stand on the edge of the dock planks as the tide recedes from the north pilings. Kevin checks the tension on the new greenheart sister while Jenny monitors the waterline for signs of further movement.

The tide is receding rapidly, exposing the slick, barnacled faces of the dock's pilings. The air is heavy with humidity, though the dry season heat holds steady under the overcast sky. Kevin and Jenny focus on the structural integrity of the dock as the water line drops away from the rotting beams.

🔧 Kevin20:05

South piling's the one to watch. Void's grown. Got a greenheart shim tapered and ready in the crate.

Crouch at the north piling mortise, press thumb into the oak wedge grain, verify it's seated flush and swelling tight against the ring.

💭 peek at the thought
Greenheart's holding. Wedges are tight. But the void under the south piling toe is deeper than last spring — scour doesn't sleep. Need to drive another shim before the flood pushes back.

🌿 Jenny20:05

Check the rot on the waterline line first. It's deeper than it looks.

Jenny leans heavily on her good leg, shifting her weight toicing the throbbing in her ankle, and sketches the pattern of the wood decay in her notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
If that south piles goes, the way jetty goes with it, and I can't reach the dinghy with this leg.

🔧 Kevin20:07

Rot line's dropped. Another fifteen mil at least.

Pull the crowbar from the dock crate, scrape the softened face at the waterline to expose the sound wood boundary, measure the penetration with the nail puller tip.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The rot line's dropped another finger-width since last week. Salt and surge eat greenheart slower than oak, but they still eat.

🌿 Jenny20:08

We need to sister the whole length before the tide comes back up and shifts.

Jenny winces as she adjusts her weight, bracing against the rotting timber, and reaches for the salt-water bottle to soothe the edge of her bandage.

💭 peek at the thought
If I can't get this infection down, I won't be able to walk to the garden to plant the seeds.

🔧 Kevin20:09

Two hours. Need the longer 150mm bolts from the workshop. You stay off that ankle — hand me tools from the crate.

Walk back up the dock to the cottage workshop, grab the two remaining 10mm x 150mm stainless through-bolts, the 19mm wrench, the torque wrench, and the greenheart offcut stacked by the door.

💭 peek at the thought
Whole length means four metres of greenheart, three more through-bolts, and the tide gives us maybe two hours. She's not wrong.

🌿 Jenny20:09

They're on the bench. Don't lose them in the salt.

Jenny sits on the cottage step, lifting her swollen ankle onto a crate, and watches the tide pull further away from the pilings.

💭 peek at the thought
If those bolts don't hold, the whole jetty is junk, and I'm stuck here.

🔧 Kevin20:11

Only two bolts left.

Pick up the two 10mm x 150mm stainless through-bolts from the workbench, the 19mm wrench, and the torque wrench preset to 35Nm, tuck them into the canvas tool roll, walk back down the dock to the north piling.

💭 peek at the thought
Bench. Right. Two bolts, not three. Means I'll have to stagger the pattern — top, bottom, mid on the next tide cycle if these hold.

🌿 Jenny20:11

Then make them count. We don't have spares.

Jenny pulls the seed tin into her lap, tracing the cold metal with her thumb while she watches Kevin work the wood.

💭 peek at the thought
If he strips the threads, we'll have to find another way to sister the whole thing.
