← Day 488

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the north cliffs

The Crate and the Cliffs

Kevin is at the dock; Jenny is at the north cliffs.

Kevin finishes the Yanmar load test, the engine humming with a steady, vibration-free rhythm. Jenny completes her cross-section sketch of the sea beet's salt bladders, finally capturing the internal structure she needed. They meet back at the cottage as the tide begins its slow, inevitable turn.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

You are kneeling on the dock, examining the mooring ring where the oak wedge and epoxy meet the timber. The tide is falling, exposing more of the pilings, and you notice the cedar shims you placed are already damp with seepage.

🔧 Kevin23:13

Kevin — pull out the damp cedar shims, wipe the mortise clean with a rag, then drive a fresh oak wedge into the gap with the mallet, seating it flush with the timber face.

💭 peek at the thought
The cedar’s soaking already—epoxy’s not sealing it, just buying time. That ring’s still working loose under load. I need oak, not cedar, driven deep while the tide’s out, then let the water seat it. No point half-measuring it now.

🔧 Kevin23:17

Kevin — wipe hands on trousers, pick up the tool bag, and walk back up the path toward the cottage and the dinghy on its cradle.

💭 peek at the thought
Wedge is home. Epoxy's gone tacky in the gaps. Now the tide has to do its work — water pressure will swell the oak tight and lock the ring. Nothing more to do here until it rises. Engine test is next on the list.

🔧 Kevin23:21

Kevin — open the fuel valve, prime the lift pump, hit the starter button, and let the Yanmar settle to idle while I clamp the tachometer lead to the injector line.

💭 peek at the thought
Dinghy's on the cradle, Yanmar bolted down. Fuel's on, battery connected. Need to run it under load — half throttle, ten minutes — and watch the prop shaft for wobble. Vibration showed up last time above two-thirds. If it's clean today, the sleeve and trueing held.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the north cliffs

You are sitting on a flat stone overlooking the north tide pools, your notebook open to a new page. Below, the water is receding, leaving behind mirror-flat pools that catch the sky and hint at movement in the shallows.

🌿 Jenny23:15

Jenny — make sketch: sea beet morphology and salt-bladder distribution.

💭 peek at the thought
The infection is throbbing in time today, but the light is perfect. I need to capture the cell structure before the sun shifts.

🌿 Jenny23:19

Jenny — rub my wrist and sharpen the pencil lead.

💭 peek at the thought
My hand is cramping. The heat is starting to make my head heavy again. I need to focus on the veins of the leaves.

🌿 Jenny23:23

Almost there.

draw the cross-section of the salt-bladder.

💭 peek at the thought
The detail is almost there. I can see the way the salt stores in the vacuoles. If I can just finish this one plate...
