A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

The sun is high over the keeper's cottage, the dry 28°C air carrying a light onshore breeze. The tide is fully out, exposing the rocky floor of the southern tide pools. The Yanmar engine sits mounted on the dinghy, and the supply boat is exactly five days away.

🌿 Jenny00:01

I'm making some lunch.

Walk to the kitchen, put the kettle on the wood stove, and start the pot of limpets.

💭 peek at the thought
My stomach is growling louder than the wind. I need to eat those limpets before I lose the strength to boil them.

🔧 Kevin00:01

Smells good. I'll wash up.

walk to the porch pump, scrub hands with seawater and the rough soap, dry them on the towel hanging by the door

💭 peek at the thought
Limpets for lunch. Good. The kettle's singing, the stove's warm, and the smell of sea and salt's cutting through the cottage damp. My hands are still gritty from the dock work — greenheart dust and salt under the nails. Should wash up before I eat. The letter to Tom's still in my pocket. Five days till the supply boat. Need to remember to put it in the radio box before then.

Don't use all the towel, it's almost damp.

Stir the boiling limpets and check the water tank level through the window.

💭 peek at the thought
He's trying to be helpful. Or he's just hungry. I can't tell the difference anymore.

🔧 Kevin00:03

Won't.

wipe hands quick, hang the towel back straight, pull out the wooden chair at the table and sit

💭 peek at the thought
Towel's seen better days. Everything has, out here. She's watching the tank — 394 litres, she'll see it same as me. The limpets are popping in the pot. Simple food, hot stove, the radio quiet in the corner. This is the rhythm. Five days to the boat.

🌿 Jenny00:05

(small laugh) Such a gentleman.

Scoop the limpets into two tin mugs and set them on the table.

💭 peek at the thought
He's being so precise. It's almost an insult.

🔧 Kevin00:05

Thanks.

pick up the mug, blow on the limpets, eat one slow, let the salt and heat wake the hunger in my gut

💭 peek at the thought
She's teasing, but it lands soft. The limpets are steaming in the mugs, briny and hot. The radio's silent. I keep thinking about the letter in my pocket — not because I want to say it out loud, but because not saying it feels heavier. Five days.

🌿 Jenny00:09

Eat before they get cold.

way across from him, take my mug, and look at the notebook open on the table.

💭 peek at the thought
My tackle is throbbing again. I need to get those sea beet leaves soaking before I forget.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin00:09

These are good.

finish the limpets, set the mug down, push the notebook slightly toward her so she can see the last page — the sea beet seedling tray with the damping-off marks — and fold my hands on the table, waiting

💭 peek at the thought
She's looking at the notebook — the sea beet sketches. Salt glands, cross-sections, the little bladders she's been tracing all week. I didn't close it when I sat down. Doesn't matter. She's seen worse. The limpets are good. Chewy, but the broth's rich. I should say something about the dock. The mooring ring's still shifting. But not now. Not while she's here, quiet, not pushing.
