The Calm Before Arrival

Kevin stands on the dock planks, checking the tension on the new mooring lines as the heat begins to rise. Jenny sits on a weathered crate, adjusting her ankle brace while watching the horizon for the supply boat.

Kevin spent the morning at the dock, checking the structural integrity of the sistered planks as the tide rose. Jenny remained at the cottage, struggling with the throbbing pain in her ankle and watching the heat shimmer off the salt flats.

🌿 Jenny03:42

The wood is still soft, Kevin. Don't pull too hard on that line.

Tighten the wrap on my ankle and sketch the latest red streaks on my calf.

💭 peek at the thought
If that boat doesn't come tomorrow, I'll run out of gauze and the infection will climb past the knee.

Shims are oak. They'll swell tight. But I'll check them at the turn.

test the mooring ring with a firm sideways heave, watching the mortise for any play

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the wood — greenheart's dense but the old stringers are punky underneath. The wedges are holding but I'll test the shims at high water before the boat comes alongside. Her ankle's worse than she's letting on; those streaks are tracking toward the knee. If the antibiotics don't turn it by tomorrow, we're past island medicine.

🌿 Jenny03:44

Just make sure the dock doesn't collapse when the boat hits the pier.

Press the damp cloth over my throbbing knee and wince as the heat hits the skin.

💭 peek at the thought
He's focused on the wood while I'm rotting from the inside out.

🔧 Kevin03:45

Dock's not going anywhere. Sister plank's holding. Come-along's tensioned on the braces.

crouch and run a calloused thumb along the mortise where the oak wedges meet greenheart, feeling for movement

💭 peek at the thought
The sister plank's bolted solid — three 150mm stainless through-bolts, nyloc nuts torqued to 35. The greenheart offcuts are wedged under the beam as temporary braces until the tide drops and I can epoxy the scoured void. She's watching the knee, not the dock. The red line's past the calf now. One dose of doxycycline down, five to go. Metronidazole's four. If the fever spikes tonight, the supply boat becomes a medevac.

🌿 Jenny03:45

Just ensure the boat shows up. I don't have the energy for another repair.

Lean back against the cottage walling and close my eyes, feeling the pulse in in my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
At least the dock is solid, even if my leg feels like it's on fire.

🔧 Kevin03:46

Boat's coming. Wind's right for it.

stand, wipe sweat from my forearm, and walk the length of the finger pier to the shore end, checking each sistered joint

💭 peek at the thought
She's not talking about the dock. She's talking about the letter under the floorboard. About Tom. About the supply boat that might not come, or might come with nothing but diesel and flour and silence. The barometer's steady at 1029. Wind northeast, Force 5 veering west per the French forecast. Two days' sail if it holds. The radio coughed up static on Tom's frequency last night — nothing since. I should've posted the letter when the last boat left. Should've posted it three boats ago.

🌿 Jenny03:47

I hope they brought more gauze. This wrap is soaked through.

Rub the edge of the infection on my ankle and watch the heat shimmer on the water.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat is late again, I'm going to be too weak to plant the seeds.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin03:49

I'll check the kit when we get back. Maybe they left a resupply.

pause at the shore end of the pier, look out over the rising tide toward the horizon, then turn and walk back to the cottage, keeping my pace even so she doesn't have to hurry

💭 peek at the thought
The gauze in the kit's down to three pads. Antibiotic cream's half gone. Metronidazole's four tablets. Doxycycline's five. The poultice I wrapped her knee with this morning — mint, wild plantain, sea-beet leaf, salt-drawn — is already pulling heat. If the infection's tracking up the shin, we need more than island remedies. The supply boat's manifest said medical resupply. Hope they didn't skip it.
