A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

The trench is complete, successfully diverting the overflow water away from the cottage foundation into the south gulley. The flow is clear for now, though the heavy humid air and the falling barometer pressure signal a storm is approaching soon.

🔧 Kevin17:39

Jenny, I’m going to dig a trench from the overflow pipe to the south drain — keep the water from pooling under the cottage. Want to come or rest your ankle?

walk to the rain tank, check the overflow outlet where it drips against the stone foundation, then grab the spade from the shed and mark the trench line with my boot — shallow, sloping away from the cottage, toward the existing drainage gul

💭 peek at the thought
The rain tank’s overflow is still eating at the foundation — I can smell the damp rot under the floorboards. I patched the mooring ring, but this is slower, quieter damage. If I don’t divert the water tonight, the cottage won’t last the winter.

🌿 Jenny17:39

I'll stay here. Just make sure the slope is steep enough or it will back up.

Sit on the porch steps, resting my swollen ankle on a crate, and watch him dig.

💭 peek at the thought
If the foundation rots, the whole structure shifts, and I can't have my sketches sliding off the table.

🔧 Kevin17:41

I’ll make it steep — one in ten drop. If it backs up, I’ll know by morning. Hand me the crowbar if you see the pipe clogging.

dig the trench with the spade, using the crowbar to loosen the compacted layer about 18 inches down, then slope the channel sharply toward the south drainage gulley, checking the fall with a scrap of wood as a level.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s right — if the grade’s too shallow, the water’ll just pond and find another way in. I need to dig deep enough to use gravity, not hope. The soil’s loose near the surface but packs hard below — I’ll have to break through the pan layer.

🌿 Jenny17:41

Don't over-dig, the soil is already soft enough near the wall.

Reach for the crowbar leaning against the whitewashed stone and hand it to him.

💭 peek at the thought
He's focused on the angles, but I'm focused on how the water eats the stone.

🔧 Kevin17:43

Got it. I’ll follow the natural grade — just nudge it where it’s pooling. No need to make a grave for the foundation.

use the crowbar to gently loosen only the saturated soil where the overflow drips, then shape a shallow, wide swale with the spade — just enough to guide the flow away from the wall, tamping the edges lightly with my boot to hold the shape

💭 peek at the thought
She’s watching the soil, not just me — knows how it behaves after rain. I’ve been digging like I’m clearing a wreck, but here, less is more. The goal isn’t a canal — it’s a whisper of a path for the water to leave.

🌿 Jenny17:43

Just make sure it clears the rocks, or the silt will choke it by next week.

Lean back against the stone wall, the throbbing in my ankle pulsing in time with the rhythm of his shovel.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right about the grade, but the water always finds a way back to the cracks.

🔧 Kevin17:45

I’ll clear the lip and slope it smooth — no pockets for silt to catch. If it runs clean tonight, it’ll hold.

use the trowel to scrape out any loose stones or clods from the trench path, then smooth the channel with the back of the spade, ensuring a steady, unobstructed slope from the overflow pipe to the drainage gulley, testing the flow by pourin

💭 peek at the thought
She’s thinking ahead — silt, not just water. If I don’t clear the rocks and grade it smooth, the trench’ll silt up and fail before the next storm. I need to sweep it clean, not just dig it.

🌿 Jenny17:46

Jenny — pull my notebook from my lap and start sketching the way the water is eroding the earth near the foundation.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so sure of the physics of it, but I see how the salt is already pitting the mortar there. pressoSAY: If it still pools, we'll have to line it with those flat stones.
