A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

The midday sun beats down on the cottage as the smell of boiling sea vegetables fills the kitchen. Jenny has focused on debriding her ankle in the salt soak, while Kevin monitors the stove and the limpets. The tide is fully out, exposing the rocky flats below, but the water tank overflow continues to seep into the earth beneath the cottage foundation.

(Quiet sigh of exhaustion)

Walk to the kitchen, boil a pot of salt water, and gather the first aid kit.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is throbbing in time with the tide; I need to clean that wound before the infection gets into the bone.

Want me to take over the limpets? I’ll clean and boil them while you get that soak ready.

walk to the tide pool bucket, grab a handful of fresh limpets, rinse them in seawater, then head to the kitchen stove and start scrubbing shells with a stiff brush.

💭 peek at the thought
Jenny’s moving slow today—ankle’s worse than she’s letting on. She’s boiling water for a soak, first aid kit out. She doesn’t ask for help, but I can see it in her shoulders. I should do something useful without making a fuss.

Okay. way don't get any sand in the pot.

Sit on the kitchen chair, unwrap the ankle brace, and prepare the salt water solution.

💭 peek at the thought
At least he's being useful for once, even if he won't look at the leg.

🔧 Kevin17:26

No sand—just clean shells going in. You rest that ankle; I’ll handle the pot.

finish scrubbing the limpets under running seawater from the bucket, then place them carefully into the pot Jenny’s filling, ensuring no debris or grit gets transferred with them. Set the pot on the stove to boil.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s tired, but she’s still thinking ahead—don’t want grit in the boil. Smart. I’ll be extra careful rinsing these. She’s unwrapping the brace now, so the swelling’s likely up again. This routine’s becoming familiar: soak, poultice, antibiotics. I hate that she’s gotta do this every day.

🌿 Jenny17:27

(Sharp intake of breath)

Open the first aid kit, take the tweezers, and begin soaking the warm salt water.

💭 peek at the thought
The skin is tight and angry; if I don't debride this now, I won't be able to plant Grandmother's seeds.

🔧 Kevin17:28

Kevin — continue watching the pot as it comes to a boil, then reduce to a steady simmer, timing the cook so the limpets are tender but not rubbery—about eight minutes from rolling boil.

💭 peek at the thought
That breath—she’s in pain just moving the ankle. She’s soaking it now, tweezers ready for debridement if needed. She’s not complaining, but I can see it’s bad. I’ll keep quiet, keep working. Limpets’ll be ready soon.
