Morning

The heavy air thickens as the pressure continues to drop. The high tide reaches its peak.

Kevin tested the radio and checked the water tank overflow trench, then tightened the garden shade cloth and waited on the porch. Jenny tightened her ankle wrap, began climbing the north ridge path, stopped mid-climb due to ankle pain, and watched rain approach on the horizon as Kevin went to meet her.

(None)

Tightens the ankle wrap, tucks the notebook under her arm, and limps toward the north ridge path.

💭 peek at the thought
If that barometer drops another point, the north ridge will be a muddy mess. My ankle is throbbing like a second heart.

🔧 Kevin18:07

Jenny—wait. The barometer’s falling hard. If the tide turns and the wind backs west, that path could flood fast. Let me come with you, or at least radio ahead if you hit trouble.

walk to the radio shelf, pick up the mic, and key it briefly to test the frequency—just to see if the air is clear, then lower it without speaking.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure’s dropping fast—storm’s not waiting for the boat. I should’ve checked the tank vent before she left. Now she’s walking into worsening weather with a tender ankle, and I’m here staring at a silent radio, too scared to hear Tom’s voice in the static. I know she sees me hesitating. She doesn’t say anything, but she knows why I won’t turn it on. Some silences aren’t peace—they’re just fear wearing patience.

🌿 Jenny18:09

I'll be back before the wind shifts. way watch the tide.

Gives him a sharp, impatient nod and begins the slow ascent toward the north ridge, favoring her left leg.

💭 peek at the thought
way thinks I can't walk a few meters. I need to see those salt glands before the clouds close in completely.

🔧 Kevin18:09

I’ll be at the spring when you get back. Boiling water for tea. No sugar.

turn the radio on, tune to Tom’s frequency, and listen—just listen—for thirty seconds, then turn it off and walk to the rain tank to check the overflow trench one more time, making sure it’s clear and flowing south.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s not asking for company—she’s asking for space. And I keep giving her worry instead. The storm’s coming, yes, but so is the chance to just… be here with her, not fixing, not fearing, just present. I’ve spent too long preparing for disasters and not enough time staying in the one that’s already here—the quiet between us.

🌿 Jenny18:12

(None)

Steps off the porch, her boots crunching on the dry earth, and begins the steep climb toward the north ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
way's always worried about the tea while I'm worried about the morphology of the sea beet before the rain hits.

🔧 Kevin18:12

Kevin — walk to the garden, pull the shade cloth tighter over the tomato rows where the wind’s lifting the corners, then sit on the porch step and wait—not for her to return, but for the wind to shift so I’ll know when it’s safe to breathe again.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s gone. The radio’s warm in my hand from the brief test—I didn’t hear Tom, just the hiss of nothing. Good. Or maybe not. I don’t know what I’m hoping for anymore. The trench is clear—water’s running south, away from the cottage. I did that right. But I keep waiting for her to turn back, to say she forgot something, to give me a reason to follow without seeming like I’m guarding her. She won’t. And I shouldn’t. Not this time.

🌿 Jenny18:14

(None)

Stops mid-climb, wincing as the ankle throbs, and watches the first grey line of rain on the horizon.

💭 peek at the thought
If the pressure drops another point, the north ridge will be a slide of mud. I need those salt glands before the light dies.

🔧 Kevin18:14

Jenny! Rain’s coming—turn back, I’ll meet you on the path.

stand up from the porch step, grab my jacket from the hook, and walk down toward the north ridge path, keeping my eyes on her position so I don’t lose her in the murk.

💭 peek at the thought
She stopped. She saw it too—the rain coming in off the sea, low and fast. She’s not going further. Good. Now she’ll turn back, and I can meet her halfway without it feeling like a rescue. I just have to move before she decides to tough it out and keep going.
