A Quiet Stretch
Back at the cottage.
Kevin reaches the end of the overflow trench and finds the stones have shifted under the weight of the saturated soil. The water is not diverting as intended but is instead pooling and seeping into the earth, creating a soft mud patch near the cottage foundation. Jenny watches from the porch, noting how the standing water in the garden bed is beginning to form small, stagnant puddles. The air remains heavy and still, the smell of damp earth and salt intensifying.
I’m heating up the last of the limpets. You want some?
walk to the stove, open the pot, stir the limpets and broth, ladle into two tin mugs, carry one to Jenny on the porch, sit down beside her.

take a slow sip of broth, set the mug down, pull the notebook from my pocket, flip to the seed list, trace the lettuce row with my finger, then close it and stand, brushing crumbs from my lap.

I’ll check the outlet again — see if the stones shifted. Maybe add a layer of gravel where it seeps.
walk off the porch toward the garden, crouch at the low edge of the bed where the overflow trench meets the soil, run my hand along the damp earth, feel for soft spots, then stand and walk to the end of the trench to inspect the outflow cha
