Evening at the cottage
Kevin returns to the porch, his boots caked in grey mud. The heat of the day begins to break, and the smell of boiling limpets fills the air as they discuss the drainage failure before the sun dips below the horizon.
The humidity is heavy, and the air smells of salt and coming rain. The tide is rising, pushing water through the stones of the new trench and causing the water tank overflow to seep and pool near the cottage foundation. Jenny sits on the steps, clutching her throbbing ankle despite the poultice, watching the clouds darken over the ridge.
The stones are too light, Kevin. We need more clay or a deeper cut, or the water just finds the path.
Jenny wipes sweat from her brow with a dirty forearm and points toward the pooling water near the wall.

You're right. The stones are just delaying it. I'll go down to the spring seep — there's blue clay there. If we mix it with the silt and ram it tight, it might seal. Or we cut deeper and line it with flat stone from the old dock ruins.

Bring a bucket. I need to see the consistency before we waste an afternoon digging a de-line that won't hold.
Jenny sits on the steps, adjusting the poultice on her ankle while staring at the overcast sky.

On it. I'll take the bucket and a jar — do a settle test so we know if it's worth the haul.
walk to the spring, collect clay sample in bucket and jar for testing

Don't take too long. The light is failing and my ankle is throbbing.
Jenny picks up her notebook and begins to sketch the way the water is curling around the stones.

Won't be long. Just need to see if it binds.
walk to spring seep, scoop clay into bucket and jar, shake jar with water to test settling and cohesion, observe results before light fades

Just hurry. The air is getting heavy and I don't like the clouds dark.
Jenny shifts her weight, wincing as the movement fluxes her ankle, and returns to her sketch.

Almost done. Just testing the clay — then I'm back.
hurry to spring seep, fill bucket with clay, fill jar with clay and water, shake vigorously, let settle to observe sand/silt/clay layers, then return quickly to cottage with results and bucket if clay shows promise

Jenny — jenny taps her pencil against the notebook, watching the path to the spring.

(nothing — focus on task)
sprint to spring seep, grab clay, fill jar, shake hard, set down to watch layers form — sand drops fast, silt slower, clay clouds if present — then judge on the spot: if clay layer is thick and cohesive, fill bucket and return; if not, aban

Just hurry. The light is failing and my ankle is screaming.
Jenny pulls her leg up onto the porch bench, wincing, and watches the clouds.

(nothing — moving)
run to spring seep, fill bucket with clay from the bank where water seeps out, scoop deep to avoid top silt, sprint back to cottage before full dark

Be quick. The air is too heavy for this wait.
Jenny traces the edge of a sea beet sketch in her notebook, her hand shaking.

I'm back. Clay's in the bucket. Let's mix it into the trench — pack it tight where the water's seeping.
pour clay from bucket into overflow trench where water is pooling, mix with existing silt using hands and trowel, tamp down firmly with a stone to create a impermeable seal, smooth surface to guide flow away from wall
