A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

Kevin repaired the water tank overflow trench by clearing silt and resetting deflector stones. Jenny inspected and rebandaged her ankle poultice with Kevin's help. Both ate boiled limpets and limpet broth for sustenance.

🌿 Jenny20:07

Jenny — sit on the kitchen chair and peel back the bandage on my own to inspect the poultice.

💭 peek at the thought
way ankle is throbbing again. If I don't get this infection under control, I won't be able to walk to the north ridge tomorrow.

🔧 Kevin20:07

Let me take a look. Mind if I redo it?

Gently take Jenny’s hand, lift the old poultice, and clean the ankle with a cloth soaked in warm water from the kettle.

💭 peek at the thought
The poultice looks clean but the skin’s still raw. I should reapply fresh mint and sea beet before it dries out.

🌿 Jenny20:09

just be quick. The skin is angry.

watch his hands as he works, tracking the redness spreading away from the wound.

💭 peek at the thought
he's being too gentle. It hurts more when he's careful.

🔧 Kevin20:09

Hold still. I’m putting the cream on now.

Squeeze a thin line of antibiotic cream along the inflamed edge, then lay a fresh poultice of crushed sea beet and mint over it, securing it with a clean strip of gauze tied snug but not tight.

💭 peek at the thought
The red’s creeping up the tendon — infection’s winning. I need to get the antibiotic cream on, fast, and keep it covered.

🌿 Jenny20:11

thanks.

lean back against the stone wall and close my eyes, letting the throbing subside slightly.

💭 peek at the thought
the mint is cold, but the heat in the bone is still there. I need to check the water tank before the storm really hits.

🔧 Kevin20:11

I’m going to look at the overflow trench. Shout if it flares.

Pull on my boots, grab the spade from by the garden wall, and step out into the thickening cloud to follow the trench line from the tank’s outlet toward the cottage corner.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s resting now, but the infection’s not beat yet. I should check the water tank overflow before the rain gets worse and starts eating the foundation again.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny20:13

watch for the silt near the stones.

stand up slowly, wincing as the weight shifts, and limp to the porch to watch him work.

💭 peek at the thought
if that water pools, the whole foundation is going to go. I can't have the tank shifting now.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin20:13

Got it. I’ll clear the choke and set a splash guard.

Kneel at the trench’s bend, use the spade to scoop out the wet silt blocking the flow, then place two flat stones from the scrap pile to deflect the water away from the cottage foundation and keep the channel clean.

💭 peek at the thought
The silt’s building where the water hits the stone — if I don’t clear it, it’ll dam and send water sideways into the wall. I’ll dig it out and lay a few flat stones to guide the flow.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny20:15

Make sure the stones are deep. The rain looks heavy.

lean against the way post, watching the water channel away from the wall.

💭 peek at the thought
he's working faster than I expected. If thation holds, the tank won't own itself.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin20:15

Going deep. One sec.

Pry out the first stone, dig a few inches deeper until I hit solid gravel, reset the stone so it’s seated firm, then repeat for the second, tamping the soil back around each to hold them steady against the coming runoff.

💭 peek at the thought
The stones need to sit on firm ground, not just in the muck, or they’ll tilt and wash out. I’ll dig down to the packed gravel underneath before setting them.
