A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

The rain continues its steady drum on the cottage roof as the water tank finally reaches its 400-litre capacity. The overflow moves to the stone-lined trench, though the saturated earth near the foundation remains a concern. Inside, the smell of boiling limpets and sea beet fills the small kitchen while the salt-heavy radio occasionally crackles in the background.

The water is boiling. I'm not hungry.

Sit at the kitchen table, wrap the damp cloth around my ankle, and watch the limpets dance in the pot.

💭 peek at the thought
My own is throbbing in time with the rain on the tin roof. I need to eat those limpets before I lose the strength to even stand.

I’ll eat mine quick, then get back to the trench. That water’s still creeping where it shouldn’t.

take one limpets from pot, eat it quickly, then walk to back of cottage to check overflow trench and begin reworking saturated section with gravel and geotextile fabric.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s not eating. Again. The limpets are ready, but hunger isn’t the issue. Something heavier is sitting with her at that table, and I don’t know how to lift it without making it worse.

🌿 Jenny21:29

Use more heavy stones, the silt will just fill the gaps.

Pick up the notebook and sketch the morphology of the sea beet leaves on the table, focusing on the salt glands.

💭 peek at the thought
He's fighting the earth with pebbles while the water is patient. If that trench doesn't hold, the foundation will go by next winter.

Heavy stones it is. I’ll haul the flat ones from the south ridge — they’ll bed tight and shed the silt.

walk to south ridge, select two flat, heavy stones (about 20kg each), carry them back to cottage, and place them in the overflow trench where water is pooling, then begin layering gravel and geotextile fabric on top to stabilize the flow.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s right — silt will choke the drain if we don’t weight it down. But her focus is elsewhere now, in the veins of a leaf, in the quiet precision of drawing. I don’t interrupt that.

🌿 Jenny21:31

Make sure they're flush with the trench floor, don't leave any voids.

Lift a hot limet from the boiling water with a fork and blow on the steam, the salt stinging my nose.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving faster than his hands allow. If those stones aren't seated right, the water pressure will just bypass the geotextile in hours.
