Morning humidity and rising tide

Jenny sits on the porch steps watching the overcast sky while massaging her swollen ankle. Kevin checks the water level in the tank, noting the heavy air smells of damp earth and salt.

The morning light is flat under a heavy overcast sky, the air thick with the humidity of the wet season. The tide is rising steadily, lapping at the lower pilings of the dock. Inside the cottage, the water tank is nearly at capacity, and the smell of salt and drying sea beet lingers in the small space.

The air is too thick to breathe today.

Pulls out her way and begins drawing the structural veins of the clouds.

💭 peek at the thought
If that pressure doesn't drop soon, the rain is going to ruin the trench again.

Tank’s down to three-ninety-seven. Let’s get some limpets boiling and wrap that ankle proper before it locks up.

walk to the rain tank, check the level by sight, then head to the porch with a bucket for limpets and the first aid kit.

💭 peek at the thought
The tank’s low again—397 litres, but it feels like less with this humidity. Jenny’s ankle’s worse; she’s drawing clouds to keep from thinking about the pain. I should’ve fixed that trench yesterday.

It's not just the water, it's the pressure.

Tightens the wrap on her ankle with a wince as the heat flares.

He thinks a bucket and a bandage fix the rot that's already in the wood.

Pressure’s dropping. Storm’s on the way. Let’s eat, then I’ll take a look at the tank trench and the mooring ring—you stay off that foot.

limpets from the bucket into the pot, set it on the stove to boil, then grab the first aid kit and walk to the garden to inspect the overflow trench.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s feeling the barometric drop—1010 and falling. That’s why the air’s thick, why her ankle’s flaring. Low pressure means storm’s coming, and her old injury’s screaming. I need to get ahead of it: reinforce the tank overflow, check the dock ring, and get her off that ankle.

The tide doesn't care about your schedule, Kevin.

Opens her notebook to sketch the salt-crust on the sea much leaves.

💭 peek at the thought
If he spends all day on the ring, the garden will be underwater by morning.
