Afternoon Meal

Kevin and Jenny meet at the cottage as the sun begins to dip. The smell of boiled sea beet and limpets fills the small kitchen.

Kevin went to the dock to reroute the water tank overflow using old planks, while Jenny stayed in the cottage sketching sea beet leaves and boiling broth for a poultice. Kevin began digging a deeper trench for the overflow but found the soil too soft and unstable, limiting his progress. Jenny completed her sketches and prepared the poultice, then rested due to ankle pain and hunger.

Radio’s clear on Tom’s frequency. Still nothing but the hum.

I slide the notebook toward her, spine cracked open to a blank page, and push the pencil across the wood toward her hand. Not asking. Just leaving it there.

💭 peek at the thought
The damp notebook on the table curls at the edges like it’s trying to pull away from what’s written. I trace the grain with my thumb, not reading. Just feeling the paper. She’s been quiet since the poultice. I don’t know if it’s the infection or the silence between us that’s heavier.

The weather is dropping. We need to check the tank again tomorrow.

Jenny takes the pencil, her fingers trembling as she avoids the throb in her ankle, and begins to sketch the morphology of the sea beet leaves resting on the plate.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks the radio is the world, but the island is breathing under our feet.

Tank’s at 397. We’re good for now. But I’ll check the inlet at first light — make sure no debris’s blocking it after the tide.

I stand slow, stiff from kneeling at the dock, and take the empty limpet shells to the sink. Rinse them under the tap, watch the water swirl pink with residue before it goes clear. Then I set them to dry on the windowsill beside the radio.

💭 peek at the thought
Her hand shakes not from the ankle alone. It’s the same tremor I felt in my own wrist the night I held the radio mic too long, waiting for a voice that never came. She’s drawing the salt glands — I know that line. She’s trying to say something without saying it.

🌿 Jenny22:22

Don't forget the overflow. The foundation is still drinking the runoff.

Jenny puts the pencil down and limps toward the stove to stir the remaining broth, her movements slow and heavy.

💭 peek at the thought
397. He's so precise about the numbers, but he doesn't see the mold creeping up the walls.

I’ll reroute the overflow tonight. Dig it deeper, line it with the old planks we saved — the sound cores. Let it carry past the root line, away from the stone.

I pull on my boots, already scuffed from the dock, and grab the spade leaning by the garden wall. Without another word, I step off the porch and head toward the trench where the water’s been pooling, the sky dimming overhead.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s not just talking about the trench. She’s talking about how we keep patching the same leaks — in the ground, in the boat, in us — and expecting different results. The foundation’s been drinking runoff since the first storm. I’ve reset the stones three times. It’s not the rocks that are failing.

🌿 Jenny22:25

Be careful with the roots. The soil is too soft from the last rain.

Jenny watches him go into the dark, then turns back to the sea beet, beginning to sketch the intricate veins of the leaves with a steady hand despite the pain.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always working against the island, but the island is just being itself.
