The Midday Meal
Kevin is in the cottage kitchen and Jenny is by the tide pools.
The air is heavy and still, the 32°C heat pressing down on the island. The tide is high, lapping rhythmically against the dock pilings, while inside the cottage the slow drip of the water tank's leak continues to saturate the parched foundation. The smell of damp wood and rot is beginning to rise from the floorboards.
You stand over the stove with the pot of limpets. The smell of salt and brine fills the small kitchen.
Kevin — lift two limpets from the pot with the tongs, let them drain, and place one on each tin mug. Repeat until each plate has six. Set the mugs beside the stove, wipe my hands on my trousers, and turn to the radio shelf.

Kevin — sit on the porch step, plates in my lap, and eat slowly. First bite: briny, firm. Second: the same. I don’t taste much. Just the salt and the effort it took to get them off the rocks.

Kevin — stand, take the mugs to the sink, rinse them quick with seawater from the bucket, and set them to dry. Then walk to the radio shelf, pick up the mic, and hold it without keying it. Just feel the weight of it. Static in the air. Like always.

You sit on a dry rock, your notebook open. The water is now lapping at the soles of your boots.
just one more minute.

Jenny — close the notebook, tuck it securely into the waterproof casing, and limp slowly back toward the cottage.

Jenny — lean against the porch railing to catch my breath, clutching the notebook to my chest.
