← Day 515

the tide pools · day 515 · morning

low tide foraging

The tide has reached its lowest point, exposing the slick rocks and pools. You and Jenny meet at the water's edge to look for limpets.

Kevin and Jenny collected limpets from the tide pools at low tide, with Kevin successfully gathering several while Jenny struggled due to her injured ankle. The shortwave radio crackled with intermittent voice fragments, though the shattered insulator prevented clear reception. Both returned to their respective tasks: Kevin to inspect the dock mooring ring, and Jenny to tend her ankle and sketch sea beet morphology.

🌿 Jenny02:59

Watch your step there, it's slick.

Squat down near a rock shelf, shifting weight carefully to reach for a large limpet.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is throbbing in time with the waves; if I don't get some protein today, I won't have the strength to reach the ridge.

🔧 Kevin02:59

Got your back. Call if it goes.

kneel beside Jenny, left hand braced on the rock, right hand slow and flat to lift a limpet from the shaded face where it’s clamped tight. I work the knife under the edge, feel the give, and lift it clean into my palm.

💭 peek at the thought
The rocks are black and wet, algae making them like ice. I see her favoring the left ankle, the way she shifts her weight slow and careful. She’s trying not to show it, but the red’s crept higher since yesterday. I don’t say anything. I just move in beside her, keeping my weight on the balls of my feet, ready to slip if she does.

🌿 Jenny03:01

This one's good size.

Place the limpet in the bucket and look for the next one.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always so focused on the mechanics of it while the world decays under our feet.

🔧 Kevin03:01

You want me to take the next stretch? I can work this shelf while you rest on that dry slab.

shift along the rock to the next shaded vertical face, knife ready, eyes scanning for the dark cone of a limpet. I find one, small but firm, and work the blade under the rim with short, careful strokes to avoid slipping on the wet stone.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s quiet now, just the scrape of her glove on rock and the occasional plop when a limpet hits the bucket. I watch her shoulder tense when she reaches too far, the way she catches herself before she winces. The infection’s in the tendon, I can tell. She’s still trying to be useful. I hate that she has to.

🌿 Jenny03:03

I'm fine. Just need a minute.

Reach for a cluster of limpets under a ledge, wincing as the ankle pulses.

💭 peek at the thought
If I let him do everything, I'll never be able to walk to the garden ever again.

🔧 Kevin03:03

Then I’ll work here. You sit, watch the water. I’ll call if I see anything worth saving.

move in close to the ledge, left knee down on the slick rock, right hand feeling along the underside for limpets clustered in the dark.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s lying. I can see the sweat on her temple, the way her breath hitches when she puts weight on it. She won’t let me take over because she thinks I’m here to fix things, and if I take this from her, it’s one more thing I’ve decided for us. But I can’t watch her hurt herself for pride.

🌿 Jenny03:05

Don't go too far, that shelf is covered in slime.

Pry a limpet from the rock and check the water for more.

💭 peek at the thought
He's being helpful, but the silence between us is louder than the heat in my leg.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin03:05

Staying close. This shelf’s clear — moving to the next one over, just where you said.

slide sideways along the rock, keeping low, left hand trailing for balance. I find a limpet in a crevice, shaded and fat, and work the knife in from the side, using the rock as leverage to pop it free without slipping.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s watching me now, not the rock. Making sure I don’t wander where she can’t follow. I don’t blame her. If I slipped and went under, she’d have no way to pull me out. The thought sits cold in my chest — not fear for myself, but for what she’d do alone.

🌿 Jenny03:07

Watch for the crabs. They get fast today.

major the sand off the limpet and look for the next cluster.

💭 peek at the thought
The water is pulling away, leaving all the rot and the life exposed.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin03:07

Crabs are out. I’ll keep the bucket between us — they’ll think twice.

shift to the next rock shelf, crouched low, right hand feeling along the edge where the rock meets the sand. I spot a limpets’ trail in the wet sand and follow it to a cluster under a small overhang, then begin prying them loose one by one,

💭 peek at the thought
She’s talking to keep her mind off the pain. I can hear it in the way she’s naming things — crabs, slime, shelves — like she’s giving herself a task to focus on. I don’t correct her when she says “major” instead of “brush.” It’s not worth it. I just keep working, matching her rhythm.
