Evening at the shrine
The tide continues to drop, revealing more of the base of the shrine as the wind howls through the palms.
The air at the old shrine is heavy and still in the 28°C heat of the dry season. The tide is fully out, exposing the slick rocks of the tide pools, while the barometer shows a steady but falling pressure at1002 hPa.
Look at the base. The water's gone far enough to show the lower course.
Lean forward slightly, squinting at the newly exposed stones at the shrine's base.

"Yeah. Looks like the sea’s pulling back for now." (I keep my eyes on the horizon, not the stones.)
Stay seated on the weathered stone, hands loose on my knees, watching the tide edge retreat across the exposed reef.

It pulls back too fast. The pressure is dropping.
Trace the edge of a carved name on the stone, my thumb catching on the grit and lichen.

"Wind’s backing. We should head back—secure the dock before dark." (I stand slowly, brushing salt from my pants.)
Rise from the shrine stone, turn toward the cottage path, and begin walking down the ridge at a steady pace, glancing back once to see if she’s following.
