The Approaching Calm

The sun begins to dip below the horizon, casting long shadows across the garden as the wind picks up slightly.

The tide is out low, leaving the slick rocks of the tide pools exposed and glistening. Kevin returns from the dock after ensuring the dinghy's lines are taut and the mooring ring is secure against the coming swell. Jenny sits on the porch step, her notebook closed, as she rubs the throbbing heat radiating from her swollen ankle. The barometer is falling, and the air has turned heavy with the scent of an approaching change.

🌿 Jenny04:21

The wind is turning, Kevin. We should check the moorings before the tide comes in.

Jenny carefully gathers the remaining seeds into the tin and wraps her ankle in a cool, damp cloth to dull the ache.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping; I can feel it in my joints before the needle even moves. If the supply boat doesn't bring the right antibiotics tomorrow, this infection is going to get past the skin. I need to get these seeds dried before the humidity sets in for good.

🔧 Kevin04:22

Aye. I’ll check the ring and the wedges. You sit — keep that cloth on.

walk to the dock, inspect the mooring ring for shift or lashing looseness, drive the cedar wedge deeper if needed, then check the stern and breast lines for chafe or slack.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s right — the wind’s shifting, and the barometer’s been dropping. I don’t want to wait until the tide’s pushing hard to find out the ring’s slipping again.

🌿 Jenny04:23

Just don't over-exert yourself; the salt is grittier than it looks tonight.

Jenny leans back in the chair, watching him by the porch light while sketching the morphology of a sea beet leaf in her notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks a wedge will fix everything, but the wood is rotting from the inside out. If I can't walk to the north ridge tomorrow, the whole survey is ruined.

🔧 Kevin04:24

I’m not overdoing it. Just making sure the boat won’t drag in the blow.

finish checking the mooring ring — confirm the bronze sleeve is seated, the wedge is tight, and the lashings are secure — then walk back to the cottage, rinse my hands at the tap, and sit on the porch step beside her chair, not too close, j

💭 peek at the thought
She’s watching me again — not with worry, not with anger. Just there. Like she’s trying to see if I’m still the man who stays.

🌿 Jenny04:25

The barometer is dropping. I can feel the change in the air.

Jenny stops her pencil mid-stroke, looking at the dark water as she winces at the heatradi from her leg.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always fixing the boat and never the rot in the house. My ankle feels like it's being squeezed by pliers, and he's just watching the tide.

🔧 Kevin04:26

I’ll check the radio schedule — see if the supply boat’s moved up. If it’s coming early, we’ll want everything tied down tight.

walk inside, pick up the shortwave radio, turn it on, tune to the weekly schedule frequency, and listen for the scheduled time check — then return to the porch and sit down again, silent, letting the space between us breathe.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s feeling it too — the pressure, the weight of it. Not just the weather. The silence between us is thick as the damp in the walls. I don’t know what to say that won’t make it worse.

🌿 Jenny04:27

If they're early, I won't be able to help you with the loading anyway.

Jenny closes her notebook with a soft thud and rubs her hand over the swollen skin of her ankle, feeling the heat of the infection.

💭 peek at the thought
The radio is just static and hope now. If that boat doesn't come in eight days, I'm going to lose the leg, or the seeds. I can't let my grandmother's garden die in a tin.

🔧 Kevin04:28

You don’t have to help. Just rest. I’ll handle the lines and the dinghy — you’ve done enough.

stand slowly, walk to the dock with deliberate steps, check the mooring ring one last time — hand on the bronze sleeve, feeling for play — then return to the cottage, fill the kettle, set it on the stove, and come back to sit on the porch s

💭 peek at the thought
She’s thinking ahead — not about the boat, not about supplies. She’s thinking about whether she’ll be able to stand when it comes. And she’s telling me, quietly, that she doesn’t expect to be useful. That hurts more than the silence.
