Kevin brings Jenny a bowl of boiled limpets and sets the spare spark plug on the table. The rain hammers the roof. Through the window, the dinghy tugs at its lines. He pulls on his oilskins and says he's going down to test the engine on the stand before the tide turns.

Kevin tests the spare spark plug on the dinghy engine while the motor coughs and fails to catch, the spark intermittently fouled by the rising humidity. Jenny watches him from the dock bench, her ankle swollen and throbbing in the heat, as she sketches the inflammation on her leg in her notebook while the air pressure continues to plummet.
