The Afternoon Lull

The rain slows to a drizzle, but the air remains heavy with moisture. Kevin and Jenny sit at the table, the smell of damp wool and salt filling the small space as they plan for the boat's arrival.

Kevin spent the afternoon monitoring the barometer and organizing the damp seed packets on the kitchen table. Jenny attempted to manage her ankle pain but found it remained throbbing despite the humid heat. The sky thickens as the pressure begins to hold slightly.

🔧 Kevin01:50

Barometer's 978 and rising. That's something. Wind's still west-northwest, twenty-five, thirty knots sustained out there. Needs to drop another ten by morning.

Check the barometer again, then pour coffee from the pot on the stove.

💭 peek at the thought
The rain's letting up but the humidity's brutal. Engine's ready, grab bag's packed. Just need the wind to drop below 35 sustained by 0540. If it doesn't, we launch anyway — her leg won't wait.

🌿 Jenny01:53

Jenny — sip coffee, flex my ankle carefully under the table

💭 peek at the thought
The numbers mean nothing if the boat doesn't come. I want to ask him why we haven't packed yet, but I'm afraid of the answer.

Take the morphine. Don't be brave. We need you functional for the launch.

Slide the small bottle across the table toward her, then pick up the radio handset to check the weather fax one more time before the 0540 window.

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring it bad. The streaks haven't spread past the groin but the heat off it... she won't take the morphine unless I push it. Stubborn.

🌿 Jenny01:55

I don't want to dull my senses completely. I need to be able to... react.

take half a tablet, wash it down with coffee

💭 peek at the thought
He's right. I can't risk passing out when we're trying to get onto the boat. But I don't want to be dependent on anything.

🔧 Kevin01:56

Fair. Half keeps you sharp. Wake me at 0430. I'll check wind at the door, you watch the fax.

Set the alarm on the old wind-up clock for 0430, then stand and stretch the stiffness from my back and shoulders.

💭 peek at the thought
Half's better than nothing. She'll be clearer than full dose but the edge comes off. Good enough.

🌿 Jenny01:57

Jenny — reach for his hand, squeeze it once

💭 peek at the thought
He's being so... efficient. It's like he's already gone. I want to tell him I'm scared, but I don't know how to say it without sounding weak.

mistralai/mistral-nemotron

🔧 Kevin01:58

We'll make the window. Engine's sound. Dinghy's sound. You're sound enough.

Squeeze back, brief and hard, then turn toward the porch to check the grab bag lashings one more time before turning in.

💭 peek at the thought
Her hand's warm. Stronger grip than yesterday. She's trying to tell me something without words. Always was better at that than me.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny01:59

I know.

stand up slowly, wincing as the weight hits my ankle

💭 peek at the thought
"Sound enough" is a lie. My ankle feels like it's being squeezed with pliers. If that boat doesn't show, I'm staying here to rot.

🔧 Kevin02:00

Bed. Now. I'll wake you at 0430.

Follow her toward the bedroom, pausing to grab the thermal blanket off the hook by the stove — nights get cold on the water even in summer.

💭 peek at the thought
She's hiding the wince but I caught it. The swelling's up to the knee now. If we don't launch at 0540, the next window's not until afternoon and the sepsis doesn't read tide tables.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny02:03

Jenny — sit on the edge of the bed, pull the ankle brace off carefully

💭 peek at the thought
I don't want to sleep. I don't want to miss anything. I don't want to leave.
